Get in-kind donations from the private sector
I have always liked books as prizes too. So people who did well, can go learn further. I think I have some copy left ebooks, as well as a few infosec books I probably don't need. A copy of cuckoo's egg strikes me as inspiringly appropriate.
I'll also ask a few companies/organisations, if they can donate stuff.
We need to determine what the rewards for accomplishing the daily set of challenges is. (And how to pay for it.)
Would IFF be willing to sponsor it?
What kind of prizes?
A coupon for a free drink or slice of potato tortilla at the bar for the first 40 folks who win? (We could make it only applicable once per person each week so each day opens up a new level of competitiveness for folks?)
Why daily
If we do challenge sets that are released and rewarded on a daily basis then people who start late, or leave early will still feel like they can play the game.
Gaming the system
Yes, people can cheat. We should discourage this socially, but also make prizes small enough where we can bear the weight of the likely group of cheaters.
Why not a leaderboard
While a leader-board for the most accomplished team will likely inspire the more competitive folks, I don't want a hierarchical ranking to be the only system of reward. Participation should be our metric for success. The disparity in skill among the attendees at IFF means that the people at the top of the leaderboard will likely not be our target audience.
