Verizon wifi tether stopped working at about August 31st, 2011, 8:00PM CDT #1106

Which device (manufacturer, type)? Motorola DroidX

Which firmware is installed? 2.3.3

What version of wireless tether are you using? Beta 5 and Beta 6

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Try to use tether with Verizon service

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

Please provide any additional information below.

I was tethering fine for the last couple of weeks, then Verizon service
redirects me to their web page.

https://dunsp.vzw.com/newSelfProvisioning/SelfProvisioning

This shows that I am connected, but they are detecting the tether service.

This was working up to about August 31st, 2011, 8:00PM CDT

I know my settings are correct....I think they just figured it out.

Update: My wife has the same phone and the same service and her tethering
works fine. I suspect that it is not a "dynamic" solution detecting the wifi
tether...maybe the amount of data that is transmitted. I heard the iPhone
detected it the same way, and people got it turned back on by telling them that
they stream with netflix or something. My data services still work on the phone
directly, so it is not a limit issue.

This same thing happened to me, on my droid x, running 2.3.3, using beta6
version of th e app. I don't think it is the dynamic solution you mention,
because I just downloaded the app and hadn't tethered at all yet, and the first
time I tried it took me to the verizon hotspot welcome screen as you described.

Thanks for the addition to the task.

To clarify what I was saying with a "Dynamic" solution is that since my wife's
tether still works and is the exact same phone, OS and solution, Verizon is not
detecting the setup configuration, or my wife would have been blocked as well.
There must have een some other trigger with my phone that "tipped" them off. I
am guessing that it is probably the amount of data traffic...but only a guess.

That is puzzling! Perhaps I did something which tipped them off to block my
tethering as well, but what I was getting at was that it couldn't have been the
amount of data traffic (for me) over this tether app, since I hadn't tethered
at all yet (having just rooted and installed the app yesterday). Why did your
wife get so lucky with her phone?! :-)

At any rate, we need some smart developer to figure out what's going on and how
to get around this I suppose...

Thanks,
Tim

AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Well. You guys could try to change the user-agent (browser on your pc/mac) with
software/plugins like this:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/user-agent-switcher/

Change it to an iphone ...

I had the same issue for about 2 hours and then i don't have the issue anymore.
I obviously did not sign up :). I just verified that as well.

When I turn on tether, the phone recognizes it (did not happen with 2.2). It
showed up on on the top bar along with tether. I just went in and turned it on
(nothing else) and after that I have been able to browse normally (I verified
that it was not my home network because I turned it off), ran a speed test and
I saw the Tether software reflect the same speed as what I saw on the speed
test. Try it.

I dont think it has to do with the user agent because I always have my phone's
useragent set to Desktop and when I tried browsing thro my phone with Tether
turned on (I was being re-directed to the vz's page from my laptop), it still
worked.

I am assuming they are probably peeking into the packets being sent to see if
it might be coming from a router or something (not a networking person, just
throwing a thought)

Yep, me too. It used to work, but not now. I am very slightly over 2GB of data
usage. I wonder if that is the issue.

The solution stopped working for my wife as well.

Also, this is not a data-usage issue...unless you are on a limited plan.

BECAUSE

I was able to install PDANet....using Bluetooth on Ubuntu 11.04...and using the
connection now to post this reply.

There's a nasty hack that gets Wifi Tether working again:

Much thanks to the page Josh3 posted. I did not do the nasty hack, but simply
selecting "Droid 2" for the profile worked! ... then I rebooted the phone to
verify and it did not work again. I could not get it to work by selecting any
other profile.

I found another patch that I may try. Look for Wugs GB tethering patch.
