Wireless Tethering for HTC EVO #362

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
Which device (manufacturer, type)?
HTC Supersonic (HTC EVO)

Which firmware is installed?
Rooted 2.1

What version of wireless tether are you using?
None

Please provide any additional information below.

Thought I would start off this thread now that the EVO is rooted. I have
one already ready to test if needed. This will be fantastic for this phone,
just have to work out how to make it work with 4G.

Sprint Hotspot is not an ad-hoc network, which means your Hero can see it. Read
the
updates right above - #97 and #98.

pre14 does not work for me, even after reboot. HTC EVO 4G, rooted via toast's
method, pre14 installed via adb on Linux. All I get is "Uable to start
tethering.
Please try again!"

---

Note to anyone who's having trouble getting Android SDK working in Ubuntu
Linux. The
Andoird SDK docs tell you to create a /etc/udev/rules.d/51-android.rules file
but
they don't mention that you have to restart udev for this change to take effect
(perhaps obvious, but not to some):

sudo /etc/init.d/udev restart

This should help the adb devices command should go from:

List of devices attached:
???????????? no permissions

To:

HT05NHL02423 device

And at that point I could install the pre14 .apk file.

jeff, please post what the log looks like. I've heard of people running the
unrevoked
root on top of toast's method and succeeding, I would try that. Do you even get
the su
permission screen?

I was under the impression that for the EVO, you needed to have the stock
rooted ROM
with Superuser Permissions to make this work correctly, no?

Original comment by Love2Shred on 7 Jun 2010 at 3:55

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
Those conditions allow for this hack to work, not to say that other conditions
won't
allow it to work also... stock ROM + unrevoked root is the baseline platform
though.

@103, andrew:

More info:

- FYI, su is located at /system/xbin/su but not /system/bin/su
- FYI, I'm not using unrevoked, I'm using
(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=690762).
- I don't have an su permission screen - Superuser Whitelist fails to install
via
Marketplace. I haven't tried via adb.
- Starting tethering from the shell works. Was able to tether an iPhone, saw
data
up/down incrementing, I assume a laptop would work.

I'm not sure what log you want to see.
/data/data/android.tether/var/tether.log has
very little useful info. Thanks for any help. =)

FYI, unrevoked (installed via adb) on top of toast's method works and allows me
to
start tethering via the GUI. Good enough for me! Thanks!

Note that after unrevoked is run, /system/bin/su file does exist and the Super
User
permission GUI shows up.

I am using the latest 2.0.2-pre-version wifi tether.
Rooted evo with root from http://link.geekfor.me/rootedromzip
Wifi tether says "unable to start tether, please try again" the binaries and
configs installed fine.
If it helps, barnacle says " failed to set ap_scan" "process stopped
unexpectedly"
Any suggestions? Maybe a bad root? I know i definitely do have SU.
Maybe like the problem with the moment root, no netfilter enabled kernel? I
don't know. HELP!!!

@thaiboxerad: Your device doesn't seem to be rooted correctly. Check:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=698137
@dateaking: Install version 2.0.2 of the app.

I installed ver 2.0.2-pre14. worked great. I drove into seattle where there is
4G and my phone connected to 4G just fine except no data is transfered. Does
anyone know if the tether caused this or the rooting process? I am not near 4G
now to test.

Thanks

I do have a newbie question, my apologies if this is not the correct place for
it, but I really would appreciate some guidance with this. I have the HTC
Desire rooted...I was able to follow the instructions above and get the program
working but as there was data passing to and from the HTC, but I have an issue
regarding the Public IP selections in the pulldown (the first one being
192.168.1.0/24), my home network is 192.168.1.1, is there a resolution for this?
the next question is more of a question for support. I am more than willing to
make a respectful donation to the cause if someone is willing to help me thru
the process of configuring my HTC Desire with the ability to create a tethering
connection to my Ipad either bluetooth or wifi (whatever is recommended).
Obviously my goal is to simply allow my Ipad to access my cellular data plan on
my HTC Desire so when I'm not in a wifi coverage area, I will still have access
to the internet via my ATT data plan. Please contact me if this is possible,
dcpapa@gmail.com and again my apologies if this is the wrong place to ask this
question...no disrespect meant..I'm just looking to make this work...thank
you...

Btw, harald, shouldn't the "WPA-PSK" part say "WPA2-PSK"? It's WPA2, isn't it?

@archon810: yes, correct it's wpa2.

to the people with an EVO having trouble getting the wifi tether to work. i had
the same problem with it not being able to start, as well as problems with some
other root programs not being able to get sufficient permissions i got rid of
the stock rom and am running a custom rom that has a su app installed.
everything is working fine now, the wifi tether app and everything else that
was giving me problems are working great!!
WIFI tether is awesome!! it has saved me several times!!

which su app are you using and where can I find it. I'm having the same
problem.

Original comment by THAIHUNT...@gmail.com on 24 Jul 2010 at 5:41

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
You can't install or use a super user app on the stock rom. You have to flash
a custom rom with an SU app installed. If you used simple root to root your
phone you need to make sure you went to extras and flashed a custom recovery
and then use that recovery to flash a custom rom.

Alternatively you may be able to flash a zip with an su app...but when your
root you might as well install a custom rom...they are just better overall.

I'm not sure why you're trying to rebroadcast an existing WiFi signal (ala
repeater mode)? If you already have WiFi in the place you're trying to connect
a device to, why would you need to proxy it through your HTC Evo 4G?

The WiFi tethering works as intended; it allows you to share your 3G/4G data
connection with various WiFi clients.

Because my 3g is fairly slow around 350 to 800 khz and I like to take my laptop
down to my office. The EVO was a medium point to broadcast the wireless signal.
When first launched on June 4th my evo would start tethering connect to a
wireless signal and I could get on a distant signal from my laptop by putting
the evo halfway between the signal and my laptop. WORKED GREAT
