If this is at all possible, I'd use it too!
While I partially solve this in my PR #43 , I would leave this issue open since my PR only provides a developer-friendly solution, while it would still not be (easily) possible for normal users to utilise the categories for different styling.
Most people only use one kind of footnotes. However, the viral blog "Wait but why?" uses two types of references. One is for sources, but the other is for fun facts and additional information, which might be interesting for some readers, but not for all of them.
It would be great to have the possibilityof defining categories for footnotes, which are counted separately on each page and use different styles. I think this would be easily achievable by using a shortcode parameter which is then used as CSS class.
in #17 you could then allow for defining styles for every individual category through a drop-down.
