The Problem

Recently I started looking into getting my Boating Captains Licence. One of the requirements was that you need to have 360 days on the water since you were 16. They allow you to "estimate" if you can't remember 🤷 The United States Coast Guard (USCG) only requires you to have the year/month/day as well as a signature signing off on those days.

The Idea

Create a fancy excel spreadsheet to keep track of each time I go on the water.

Nice to have

Build an app that automates the tracking for you.

The app could do the following:

Keep track of your location when you go out on a ride.
Have the ability to share your progress with others
An overview page that shows high-level stats of all the boating you have done
Add weather details to each log entry
Create the ability to also add pictures along with each log
Add ability to enter in signature which is required by the USCG in order to have it count as a day towards your captains license.

Audience

Anyone who is interested in keeping track of the time on the water. This could be used for official purposes like getting your Captains Licence, or if you just like to keep track of things like when you went on your boat.

Reach

Small

Probably only people who own their own boats or are looking for an official way to keep track of their time on the water.

Level of effort

Excel: Low

Mobile / Web App: Could be done by 1 developer. Would be nice to have 1 designer.

Experience

It would be nice to have someone with a background in boating ⛵ 🛥️ so that we know what we should be keeping track of for each log entry.
