[BUG-232884] Land expansion grace period (24hr) #10070

How would you like the feature to work?

When you buy land at the end of your billing cycle and you own that land for less than 24 hours, you will not be charged for a full month of service. Instead, you will be given a 'grace period' and only be charged starting the next day at the start of your new billing cycle.

Why is this feature important to you? How would it benefit the community?

I talked to support about this issue, and they couldn't (or refused to) do anything for me and told me to come here instead.

My situation: I'm a premium member who owns 1024m of land which is free with premium. I won a land auction of 1024m on Oct 1st (increasing my tier to premium + 1024), and less than 12 hours after winning I was charged on Oct 2nd a whole month for owning that land for less than 12 hours because it was considered the end of my billing cycle. I didn't know this at the time, but apparently, my cycle's last day is on the 1st. I still don't know if this applies to everyone or just me, but I thought it started on the 1st of each month and lasted the rest of the month. CONFUSING! Even the support I was receiving from Lindens told me the wrong information at first... Yet, I'm to blame. Anyways, I canceled the land near the end of the month, and I was charged again on Nov. 2nd which led to my confusion. This is just (morally) wrong. How can you possibly charge a customer for a whole month of service, when they received less than 12 hours of that service? I didn't even get 1 day, let alone a month. That's why I suggest, TO AT LEAST grant a 24hr grace period to landowners who expand their lands near the end of their billing cycle. I would have been happy with only 12hr. If customers don't even get 1 full day of service with their new land, why should they be charged for a whole month? That's just wrong. If this feature ever gets enacted, you can start by refunding me. It's not a lot of money, but it's not about that.

Hello, and thank you for your feature request.

Incoming suggestions are reviewed in the order they are received by a team of Lindens with diverse areas of expertise. We consider a number of factors: Is this change possible? Will it increase lag? Will it break existing content? Is it likely that the number of residents using this feature will justify the time to develop it? This wiki page further describes the reasoning we use: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Feature_Requests

This particular suggestion, unfortunately, cannot be tackled at this time. However, we regularly review previously deferred suggestions when circumstances change or resources become available.

We are grateful for the time you took to submit this feature request. We hope that you are not discouraged from submitting others in the future. Many excellent ideas to improve Second Life come from you, our residents. We can’t do it alone.

Thank you for your continued commitment to Second Life.
