[BUG-233872] Objects that cannot be clicked or cammed unless in edit mode. #10900

How would you like the feature to work?

I'd like a checkbox option in the edit menu to set a prim or mesh object as an "effect" object.

This would make it so the prim cannot be selected, right/left clicked, alt+cammed, or otherwise interacted with unless you currently have the edit window open.

With the edit window already open, these objects could be selected as normal.

Editing to add that it's not this specific implementation that is important to me, it's the result. Being able to have light sources emit adjustable "god rays" that can be resized/recoloured. Being able to add fog or water ankle deep that people can interact with objects below the surface. If this is the best way to achieve that, great. If there are better ways to achieve these same effects, wonderful! I'm happy to amend this feature request to suit the best possible approach.

Why is this feature important to you? How would it benefit the community?

It's common to use mesh or prims with light effect textures, smoke textures, or other ambient effects. You see it all the time in videogames. Unfortunately, this is difficult to do in Second Life as they interfere with basic Second Life functionality. If you try to alt+cam on an object or avatar behind the texture effect, your camera instead focuses on the effect. If you try to interact with an object behind the effect prim, you're blocked by the effect prim. Etcetera. This greatly reduces our ability to create great looking effects for our Second Life environments.

Talking with the other Lindens, we think this could be implemented as something similar to a new click action, "Ignore" / "Passthrough".
