[BUG-234320] Changing a standard prim to a sculptie takes an incredibly long time. #11268

sl-service-account commented 1 year ago

What just happened?

I tried to put a sculptie texture on a prim. I tried repeatedly. It took more than ten minutes for the texture to apply. I finally made a slide show about it. Copy and paste the link below to see.

https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1K6hHhHt_9_95yX8Z1RO0qEuwsd81jRe9UJNGyf0G1rs/edit?usp=sharing

What were you doing when it happened?

I was trying to turn a torus into a sculptie via a texture.

I tried first in Rumpus Room, and then at Tejano Tech, and then at VirTech. I tried again this morning at VirTech and made a slide show about it.

What were you expecting to happen instead?

I expected that the prim would become a sculptie in less than five minutes. I am patient enough to give it that much time.

Other information

I hope you aren't degrading/deprecating sculpties. They are still the best thing since sliced bread.

Hi Iyoba,

Thank you very much for the detailed slideshow!

And no need to worry, we would never dream of deprecating sculpties. Although GLTF materials might now be the best thing since sliced bread :)

Unfortunately, there is presently a known issue on the PBR viewer with sculpties sometimes not first appearing. In the meantime, a workaround that might alleviate the issue for now is to have another user near you build a sculpty.

Thanks for your prompt response. I guess this one goes under "Degraded performance." I'm not sure your solution would do much. I'm not sure how another user would help besides moral support and misery loving company. I have plenty of "demo" sculpties that I can drop ready-made.

Why not make sure I give all my objects unique names, set them to rez for a couple of hours and come back if I'm skinning sculpties. There are sandboxes with eight and twenty-four hour clean ups.

If all else fails, I can go back to a regular non-release candidate viewer.

Moral support is always helpful but in this case having another user rez a sculpty appears to bypass the bug (at least in some quick tests while looking over this) and helps adding said sculpts to the cache.

To clarify, are your sculpties eventually rendering after leaving them for an extended period of time? And is this not happening for every sculpty you rez?

Dear Atlas:

Thank you for not blowing me off. What sort of info do you and Whirly need? I'll be heading to the "Slow Cooker" to load more sculpties around 5:30pm EDT/2:30pm SLT.

Hi Iyoba,

I'm just wanting to clarify: Do your sculpties eventually load after an extended period of time without any other actions?

And are you having issues with every sculpty you're rezzing or is it only for sculpties that haven't been rezzed before?

I have issues with sculpties I am creating with a texture for the first time. The second time, goes much faster. All sculpties will appear within a couple of hours. I have a "slow cooker," an enclosure for rezzing sculpties in the SLEA 5 sandbox. I set up a bunch of toruses, turn them into sculpties, and harvest them the next day. I've seen freshly made scullpties rezz within thirty minutes.

Readymade sculpties rezz normally. Only sculpties created via texture require a slow cooker.

You might be interested to know that sculpties made with textures from different creators rezz at different rates. Sculpties from ESO Torok and from the no-name German pack of free sculptie textures would often take an hour or more, while Cel Edelman's geometric shapes rezzed in 10-15 minutes. Could someone somewhere be making sculpties with Cel Edelman's textures?

Hi Iyoba, Please give us a pointer to where to get these sculpty textures.

Hi Iyoba,

Just reiterating Dan's comment but please let us know where we can grab one of these sculpties that take a long time to render.

This Jira is being moved to Needs More Info. Please select 'Info Provided' above after a response.

I have no idea where I picked up these sculpties. Most of them were free. One package wasn't.

I paid for a builder box of 100 cylinders from ES0 Torok, and you can buy that if you like.

The other sculptie packages came from the following users:

123 1 Sculptie Dock - Ken Fox (English) 123 Sculpts – Kubwa Strong (Simba Fur)(German) Free Sculpted Prim Maps Sculptie – Benja Kepler (English) Sculptie-Matic --Vanessa Carbetta (German)

Some of them have German names. If you look for me inworld, I can give you the sculpties. Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner.

Dan or Atlas,

I can share some of my sculptie textures late this afternoon. By the way, one of them worked really well when I rezzed it a few days ago. The new update may have fixed this problem. I'm not sure how often you are inworld. I got the sculptie packages probably more than ten years ago.

Thanks for the sculpties Iyoba.

There's definitely an issue with attempting to rez some of these.

This has also been occurring on the default release for you, correct? Does zooming the camera far out and back show any difference to the sculpties that take a long time to render after they've been rezzed?

Iyoba Tarantal commented at 2023-09-14T18:54:17Z

Dear Atlas:

I never went back to the default release.  SL upgrades require a basic download and install on my home computer and  a "surgical install" (Installation to a flash drive at home and then erasing a folder on my work machine and copying a whole folder from the flash drive and pasting it) on my work computer. I didn't want to do another double install, so I stayed with the PBR version. One day I'll learn about those fancy materials. The slow cooker solved my need to rezz a lot of sculpties. I kept them in a jar afterwards for easy rezzing.

When I get inworld again (I'm working through my lunch hour) I'll try the zoom-in zoom out trick on the banana or some of the furniture sculpts which I know I have not rezzed before.

Iyoba.

Atlas,

I don't run more than one release of SL. I just run the release candidate since those have been stable nearly all the time.

Sorry...

Dear Atlas:

As per your suggestion, I tried zoom in/zoom out. It made the default sculptie prim appear very quickly, but when it came time to add a sculptie texture.... It took 15 minutes plus for the sculptie to rezz.
