This Jira is going to read a little like a rant and it's true I am venting some frustration here but I think it's legitemately Jira worthy.
Linden Lab are in a period of upgrades, but I am noticing a new pattern is emerging - Linden Lab are routinely in new builds applying different limits to their own builds, than they do to residents:-
For example. Take the new PBR enabled Winter Wonderland regions:-
No resident can build this, you do not offer residents a region with this capacity - You're essentially showing us a tech demo that none of us can actually build in SecondLife!
This is not the only region.
Here is the SecondLife Welcome Hub:-
"Welcome to SecondLife! You can't build this, We cheated."
Surely someone at the Lab must read this statement and understand just how wrong that sounds. But the statement is sadly true!
The vast majority of objects at the welcome hub do not have LOD levels - Does Linden Lab think LOD's are broken? If Linden Labs professional creators doesn't have time to make LOD's - What hope is there for residents?
The problem with Linden Labs playing by it's own rules is that doing this means that residents will never see meaningful changes to the way land impact is dealt with. It is also very unfair on residents and breeds an 'us and them' mentality. If LL doesn't think there are enough prims, LL shouldn't be just increasing the limit for themselves, but for all of us.
When Linden Lab is building a region, they should abide by the same limits residents face, and if those limits are too restricting, the limits should be raised for everyone. It's all well and good impressing residents with these builds, if those same residents can't actually go on to build similar themselves!
Now listen I know Linden Lab wants to wow new residents, but so do us region builders too! If a team of professional, salaried paid content creators at Linden Lab can't build within the limits set for residents - What hope is there for humble residents?
Why is this feature important to you? How would it benefit the community?
I just want the whole community to be able to build great regions. Linden Labs is in a position many creators will look up to for examples - Including myself, and so when I find that LL doesn't think it can play by it's own rules, I am discouraged as a creator from building myself. I think LL should try to play by it's own rules, for the sake of improving the quality of life of everyone on the grid - Because when LL does find the rules too restrictive and wants to exceed them, residents too should benefit.
