[BUG-4121] Very slow typing

Steps to Reproduce

Chatting and typing only

Actual Behavior

With latest SL Viewer 3.6.5 and 3.6.7, the typing goes slower and slower as time goes, until not being usable anymore after 20-30 min. Relogging makes it back to normal, then slows down again. This issue never happened on 3.6.4.

Expected Behavior

Regular fast typing speed

Other information

Happening with any chat, including IMs with a very short IM history log.

Heya Angelo,

Do you see this same slow typing if you are entering text into a notecard or a script or does it only happen when typing into a chat entry box?

Do you see the same problem in nearby chat, IM chat and group chat?

When you say "typing is slow" do you mean that your text is slow to appear on screen as you are typing or that when you hit enter to send your chat, the chat is slow to print in nearby/IM/group chat or something different?

When you see this slow typing, is your performance dropping in general & are you seeing "lag" in other ways or does this only affect your typing?

I'm going to check this further. Yes, I mean that the text is slow to appear on screen as I'm typing Same in IM and public chat.

After further checking, here are some more facts:

• typing is slow anywhere (IM chat, public chat, Notecard or Script writing)
• typing is definitely more slow on laggy places (crowded SIMs)
• this is not happening in Viewer 3.6.4

• Please can you paste in the 1st line from Help -> About Secondlife from the 3.6.4 viewer where you do not see this problem. There are several versions of the 3.6.4 viewer and having the exact version number where you did not see this problem may help to narrow down the cause. It is the line that looks like this I am after: "Second Life 3.6.7 (281793) Sep 30 2013 10:17:59 (Second Life Release)"

• No-one else has reported this problem yet. That does not mean that there is not a bug lurking though. However, lets try a totally clean install of the latest release first. This can often cure all kinds of problems so it is worth a try just incase this problem is caused by some kind of settings file corruption.

  • Navigate to Applications and trash all SecondLife Apps.
  • Make sure hidden folders are set to show: http://osxdaily.com/2011/07/22/access-user-library-folder-in-os-x-lion/
  • Go to User/Library/Caches, and delete the Secondlife folder.
  • Go to User/Library/Application Support and delete the Secondlife folder.
  • NOTE: If you wish to preserve your chat logs, then you will need to make a backup copy of them before deleting the contents of the folder just named. The folder contains one or more folders in turn, each one named after your SL user name(s). Inside each of these folders, locate the chat log files. These will have the names of your groups and the people with whom you have had conversations. Select the chat log files, if you wish, and copy them to a location you can easily locate later, like a temporary folder on your deskstop. After this, you can erase the entire contents of the Secondlife folder.
  • Download and install a fresh copy of Viewer 3: http://secondlife.com/support/downloads/

  Leave all settings on default for your first few sessions. Are you still able to reproduce this problem?

• If you are still seeing this problem after doing a clean install, please can you run a session where you reproduce this problem badly. Note here the SLT time that you began to see your chat begin to type slowly. Then logout and immediately, before relogging, zip up your entire logs folder and attach it to this issue using More Actions -> Attach files. This page tells you where to find your logs folder on Viewer 3: http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/How-to-report-a-bug/ta-p/733545#Section_.3

• Can you look at fast timers to see if you can see what's taking up the time when you get the slow typing? Fast timers are a little difficult to explain but here goes...

  • Activate the Develop menu in the top menu bar with CTRL+ALT+Q
  • Then Develop -> Consoles -> Fast timers
  • When typing in chat and you are seing the slow typing problem, you will hopefully see some high spikes in the bottom section which correspond to some longer bars in the top right section.
  • Hit the "Pause" button and then you can scroll your mousewheel to move forewards and backwards in time. As you scroll your mousewheel you will see a grey bar moving in the bottom section.
  • Line the grey bar up with one of the spikes in the graph and you should see the corresponding longer bar in the top right section.
  • Click on this bar and it will give you the name of what's taking up the time and how many ms and how any calls.
  • You may need to click the bar a few times to drill down to exactly what is taking up the time.

2. Tried removing all files and re-download for a fresh start: same (even with latest 3.6.8)

Meanwhile, I noticed one thing: typing slowness is related to Graphic quality. I always used Ultra setting without any noticeable slowness, but since 3.6.5 typing speed is much more related to it. Turning down to High makes typing back as usual speed.

If you need me to run the Fast Timers test and send you log files, just tell, I will do.

Yes, Logs and fast timer results would still be helpful.

Looking at the settings that are disabled on High and enabled on Ultra:

On High: ALM & Ambient occlusion are enabled. Shadows - disabled (None). Water reflections - minimal. Avatar cloth - disabled.

On Ultra: ALM & Ambient occlusion are enabled. Shadows - enabled (Sun, Moon & Projectors). Water reflections - Everything. Avatar cloth - enabled.

Can you test setting on Ultra but then set shadows to None (Me -> Preferences -> Graphics -> Advanced) and see if you can still reproduce the slow typing?

Looks like we're coming closer... Enclosed the Log folder and a copy of the Fast Timers in Ultra mode (WITH shadows ON). Looks like the Process Message task if the one consuming lot of time (456ms in the enclosed screenshot). Just before that I found that the UI String task was also consuming a lot. By setting the Shadows OFF in Ultra mode, looks like the Process Message task goes back to normal delay, and no feeling of slow typing anymore.

After further testing, looks like the slow typing also happens in High Graphic mode too. The Fast Timers shows that UI Strings is overloaded with over 300,000 ms time. This happens in a heavy scripted halloween SIM.
