You keyboard is not usable in HMD mode? That's definitely a bug. What are you doing when the keyboard stops responding? Can you elaborate on the steps to get into this state?
As for Windows speech recognition, if we support it in the normal viewer (which I'm not sure of and need to find out), then it should work in HMD mode as well. I wasn't aware that the viewer already supported that, though. Will find out and get back to this one.

My keyboard is usable in HMD mode. This is a feature request rather than a bug. I admit i am not that good in typing blind.
To my knowledge the normal viewer does not support Windows speech recognition. There is a TPV viewer called Radegast that supports it. There is a speech recognition software called Dragon that seems to work with the normal viewer: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Dragon
In my opinion an option to use a free speech to text feature is the most appealing solution for a keyboard substitute.

I tried using SecondLife with Windows Voice Recognition without HMD. Attempting to dictate speech into the chat floater doesn't work. I attempted to say "type what I am saying" and "4x" was entered into the text field.
I switched to notepad to verify that the speech recognition understood me and would type "type what I am saying" correctly. Once SL is up the speech recognition gets confused by it.
You can do some basic things, like I was able to say "right-click" and the viewer brought up the contextual menu under the mouse pointer. I then repeated "up" or "down" to navigate the menu options. Saying "enter" selected the option. I could also to basic Windows functions like "minimize Second Life" or "close Second Life." But, I couldn't do anything like walk forward, sit, stand, etc...

I moved this to the BUG project since it's not RIFT specific.

Our apologies, it appears this jira has been a victim of a spammer. We’re cleaning up the offending comments, sorry for the mess!
Steps to Reproduce
I was trying to take part in group chat.
Actual Behavior
Windows 7 speech recognition is not supported.
Expected Behavior
Since it is not possible to use the keyboard, the viewer should support windows speech recognition for chat. Voice is neither an option for group chat nor for local chat at concerts.
