sl-service-account commented 10 years ago

Steps to Reproduce

I was trying to get to the secondlife web site

Actual Behavior

I went to go to www.secondlife.com and got redirected to google.com

Expected Behavior

I was expecting to go to the secondlife web site

Other information

I was trying to log into secondlife's web site so I could see about making a purchase of more linden's for My account. I have gone to the secondlife web site many many times seeing as I have been in secondlife since 2009. I typed in www.secondlife.com and I got redirected to www.google.com, I tried this on several computer's, and even My android phone and got the same result, I asked a few friends to try it, along with a firestorm support member and they also ran into a simular issue. The firestorm support member got directed to the website but it stripped off the www at the start of it.

Which web browser are you using?

Doesnt reproduce on my system when using Firefox 28.0 on Vista 32 bit. If I type www.secondlife.com into the address bar I am taken straight to http://secondlife.com/ if not logged into my dash board and taken to https://secondlife.com/my/?lang=en-US if I am already logged into my dashboard.

Cannot reproduce on IE 9 or Chrome 33.0.1750.154 m either.

Are you just typing www.secondlife.com into the web browsers address bar?

That looks fine. Is it only www.secondlife.com that is being directed or are other sites doing this too?

It is only www.secondlife.com that is being redirected for Me

Can you provide the account names for the other people you said experienced the same issue?

That takes Me directly to the secondlife log in page and rather quickly to.

Are you using Google DNS? ETA: Can't reproduce on Internet Explorer 11.0.9600.16521 on Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit

Please could you do a quick check if switching over to Google DNS solves the issue for you? Here's a quick guide: https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using

Example: Changing DNS server settings on Microsoft Windows 7

Go the Control Panel. Click Network and Internet, then Network and Sharing Center, and click Change adapter settings. Select the connection for which you want to configure Google Public DNS. For example: To change the settings for an Ethernet connection, right-click Local Area Connection, and click Properties. To change the settings for a wireless connection, right-click Wireless Network Connection, and click Properties. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. Select the Networking tab. Under This connection uses the following items, select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) or Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) and then click Properties. Click Advanced and select the DNS tab. If there are any DNS server IP addresses listed there, write them down for future reference, and remove them from this window. Click OK. Select Use the following DNS server addresses. If there are any IP addresses listed in the Preferred DNS server or Alternate DNS server, write them down for future reference. Replace those addresses with the IP addresses of the Google DNS servers: For IPv4: 8.8.8.8 and/or 8.8.4.4. For IPv6: 2001:4860:4860::8888 and/or 2001:4860:4860::8844 Restart the connection you selected in step 3.

I do not understand why I would want to add a setting to My internet to allow google, when I am trying to avoid them and avoid being redirected to them

sl-service-account commented 10 years ago

MartinRJ Fayray commented at 2014-03-21T05:08:00Z

This is to rule out the possibility that your DNS has issues. You don't have to use Google's free DNS, you could test this with any public DNS provider.

sl-service-account commented 10 years ago

Zagan Stoanes commented at 2014-03-21T05:11:50Z

I do not know of any public dns provider's. Im not a fan of having google shoved down My throat. My setting's for My dns was set to auto obtain which is the default setting's for window's 7

I checked with Katydid62 Resident and she also cannot reproduce this.

Zagan, I would also check your system for malware incase you have some form of the "Google redirect virus". I would expect more websites to be affected then just secondlife.com if this was the case. However, it wont hurt to check. This page may be useful: http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/how-to/security/3499499/how-remove-google-redirect-virus/

I have ran malware along with My antivirus several times before I contacted any one about this issue because I felt it was just a stupid virus and both of My scans came back clean.

Hi Zagan, Is there any way that you can do a video capture of SecondLife.com being redirected to Google in action? We cannot endorse any particular product for doing this, but one tool that may help you is Jing.
