[BUG-7575] Graphics issues with GT 650M in Mac OS X Yosemite Release #15268

Open sl-service-account opened 10 years ago

Steps to Reproduce

Normal SL activities

Actual Behavior

I am running a Retina Macbook Pro - the graphics drivers may be badly borked. If I have SL and Photoshop open at the same time, SL performance is degraded badly, then when I switch into PS, the images that are there all go black. I am now running the release version of Yosemite. I had no difficulties on Mavericks. I can run two sessions of the viewer in high graphics and with Photoshop on my Yosemite iMac and get 30fps. - so it is something in Yosemite with the GT 650M, I would guess. Not sure if it really is an SL bug or the drivers from Apple. First found this in Firestorm - see the thread there - http://jira.phoenixviewer.com/browse/FIRE-14527

This problem was discussed at Oz's usergroup today and Cinder Roxley said that Apple for some reason reverted back to older Nvidia drivers in Yosemite.

I can definitely confirm it is the GT 650M driver - I forced the graphics to the onboard Intel, turning off the GT 650 and got 25-30fps with high graphics and ALM enabled.

I have mitigated the problem somewhat on my MacBook pro -

  1. Turned off ALM in the FS viewer
  2. Went into Yosemite system preferences - Accessibility and checked Reduce Transparency (this turns off the transparent windows and menu bars)
  3. Went into Yosemite System Preferences - Mission Control and turned dashboard off (this was suggested on a gaming forum)

This seems to help somewhat (I also keep the dock hidden)

Of course this comes with the standard 20-20 warranty - 20 feet or 20 seconds, whichever comes first
