[BUG-7878] Jarring noise from Secondlife Voice connecting online #15538

Open sl-service-account opened 9 years ago

sl-service-account commented 9 years ago

Steps to Reproduce

Okay, so this happens when ever the secondlife voice is enabled in the viewer. When I log in no matter the place. and when ever I enter a new sim, along with when I log out. it will make the very loud sound. the best way I can describe it. is like the critical stop noise but not as "dire" and sound more like when a person is playing a piano and stops and drops there hands onto the keys. this might of been an error sound used back on windows vista for window popups. cause I think I've heard this before from that computer version...

Actual Behavior

Okay so with the newer updates to the viewer. I been having an issue related to a very jarring sound that happens when I log in to secondlife, and when ever I teleport around to other sims, and log out its very annoying and loud and if not expecting it abit scary.

Expected Behavior

I was expecting to just be able to log in and teleport around with out said sound happening.

Other information

I've tested and found it is from said secondlife voice. I've disabled and even uninstalled my virus protection. which was avast, Windows security essentials and Spybots search and destroy. and it still continues to make this sound from some where in my machine when ever the voice is enabled in my viewer. I would like some help finding out what is going on because the only started recently. like about three to four months. finely have gotten fed up and been trying to fix it but havent been able to on my own.

Heya Raphael,

Strange issue heh.

So just to clarify - does this problem only happen when you have voice enabled under Me -> Preferences -> Sound & Media -> Voice chat? If you leave voice enabled here but mute the voice chat volume (click the speaker icon to mute), does this noise still play? If you mute the Master volume here, does the noise still play? If you leave voice enabled and unmuted in the viewer, bring up the volume control for your system (should look something like this... http://i.imgur.com/3TUOOhM.png) and mute slvoice.exe here, does the noise still play?

Does voice in SL appear to work normally for you apart from this noise? Can you speak on voice and hear other speaking?

Just to clarify again - is it correct that you only hear this sound once when you login, once when teleporting to any different region and once when you logout?

Do you use any other Second Life viewers? If so which ones and do you have the same problem with this noise playing on those viewers?

I have never seen anyone having this problem with slvoice.exe but I have seen a few similar cases with slplugin making noises like this when it shouldnt do. Again, if you look under the volume control for your system, while logged into SL,do you see any slplugin.exe listed in here? If you mute slplugin.exe does this stop the noise happening when slvoice is unmuted and enabled?

If possible, can you record this noise (short .wav file is fine) and attach the recording to this issue using More Actions -> Attach files. A video showing the problem happen instead of the sound file would also be really helpful.

Can you run a session where you reproduce this problem, and then logout. Before relaunching the viewer, zip up your logs folder and attach it to this issue using More Actions -> Attach files. This page tells you where to find the logs folder: http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/How-to-report-a-bug/ta-p/733545#Section_.3

Thanks!

Yeah, this happens when ever the Voice is turned on in the Secondlife Viewer, and the Firestorm viewer. I tend to only use Firestorm. It isnt coming from with in the Viewer. because I have muted all of SL and it still sparks up when I log in and or teleport to other sims and log out. SL voice does work normal, when it is turned on I dont have any issues with that function. everyone can hear me and tends to be clear. When I look under the Volume control all it states when the sound happens is that the "device" speakers/headphones (IDT High Definition Audio CODEC), Is the only one that picks up on the sound. I will try to record the audio later tonight for you all to upload to this post. I have to head out to college class at this time but hope till then might give you some more info. I'll follow directions tho you given me later tonight while working on getting the sound recorded.

Raphael, what Firewall & antivirus software are you using? Could the sound be coming from your Firewall/antivirus software?

I'm also having the same thing happen with me. I went into my mixer and muted every type of slider there is one at a time testing the source. On my system if I mute the "firestorm" slider I do not hear the sound. In addition but not proven related is that many times upon entering a region or voice reset either I can hear everyone else while they cannot hear me or the situation is reversed. After several resets or teleports back and forth to another region I will get voice working. I should point out that I too am using the IDT High Definition CODEC.

12/6/14 okay, so I was able to catch the sound but only through my headset mic, because via the recording program it does not think its a system sound? (I used Action! as the recording program) Also my programs that I have on my laptop for firewall/antivirus and such are, Avast!, Windows security essentials, and spybots search and destroy. and the default windows firewall.

attached the sound clip to the jira along with logs.

Thanks. That was Firestorm viewer logs you attached, not the Linden viewer logs. As far as I can tell nothing is untowards in your logfile though. Just to clarify though - you do also get this same problem on the Linden viewer too?

Chuck, is that sound Raphael attached to this issue the exact same sound you hear when logging in, teleporting and logging out?

this happens on both viewers. when I get back from my college classes I'll also attach the SLlogs related to the Sl viewer. but yes. again happens on those viewers.

"Chuck, is that sound Raphael attached to this issue the exact same sound you hear when logging in, teleporting and logging out?"

I will say they are the same. However, I only hear the sound when voice activates so I do not hear it when I log out, only logging in and landing on a new region.

Guys, you have me stumped, hopefully someone else will be able to help you. I'm fairly sure the noise will be coming from your Firewall/antivirus/security software.

Only other thing I can think of to try is to whitelist slvoice.exe in your Firewall/antivirus/security software and see if the noise stops.

*Fixed* I did have IDT High Definition Audio CODEC driver version: 6.10.6496.0 I went into my device manager and uninstalled the driver, then rebooted my pc. Once booted up I went back into the device manager and it said that I had High Definition Audio Device with driver: 6.3.9600.16384 I then logged into SL and I'm not hearing that sound when I teleport. I can't yet report if it fixed the faulty operation.

Oh great! Raphael, does that fix you too?

Thus far my voice is working perfectly. One thing I did notice, this pc came with Beats Audio (whatever that is) after uninstalling the driver and letting the pc find a new one (or just different) I can no longer find any trace of the beats audio which is fine by me.

New HP systems seem to come with Beats audio preinstalled now: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=uk&lc=en&docname=c03727043 http://tunelab.com/2011/08/16/what-exactly-is-beats-audio-anyway/

Alright, I'll try it. I'll let you know what happens.

Raphael Maesar commented at 2014-12-09T02:20:53Z

yeah no, removing it kills all my audio. unlike Chuck this handles ALL my audio. and I do not have Beats Audio.

Raphael, if you follow the instructions on http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/find-application-making-sounds-in-background/ and install Process Monitor and filter on .wav files (hopefully this noise is a .wav) are you able to find the exact name of the .wav thats making this noise and which program it comes from?

sl-service-account commented 9 years ago

Raphael Maesar commented at 2014-12-09T20:27:01Z

I had done that before making the Jira, sadly I couldnt find it because there is so much it spews out at one moment and continues to do so when your looking through it. so makes it almost impossible to find and locate unless I was doing something wrong with the Process Monitor. I'll try it again but likely turn out the same.
