I can confirm that I've seen this occur several times. If the invite arrives in offline messages, it's impotent and doesn't join the user.
Works fine if they're online.
What just happened?
I received a group invitation whilst I was offline, and the "Join" button didn't work. In other words, I clicked "Join" and was not added to the group.
What were you doing when it happened?
I had just logged in, and I was looking at my received notifications.
What were you expecting to happen instead?
When I clicked on the "Join" button, I expected to get the "You have been added to the group" modal message box and have the group be my active group as soon as I did that.
Other information
This has happened to me twice very recently on this account. I eventually logged in at the same time as the sender and was able to join whilst online.
It has also happened to me recently on "Glitchy Alpha" which is one of my alts.
