[BUG-229374] BOM: Bakes on Mesh Layers for Universal Bakes #7253

How would you like the feature to work?

The default avatar has several hierarchical layers for bakes: skin, tattoo, underwear, gloves/socks, shirt/pants, jacket.

The Universal Bakes do not. I would like to see at least Universal skin, tattoo, underwear, and outerwear layers. (Note: it would be good if the 'skin' or bottommost layer were not limited to only be able to have one texture, the way the standard bakes layers are.)

Why is this feature important to you? How would it benefit the community?

1: Tails, Wings, and Hind Legs have skin, fur, tattoos, and even clothing, too. Or at least ornamentation. It would be useful to be able to choose a base skin/fur layer, a markings pattern, any scars/tattoos, etc. AND be able to properly layer them so they don't get applied in the wrong order.

2: Alternate-UV skins and clothing could be mixed with standard SLUV skins and clothing. Example: a Regalia body using a Universal Bake could wear mesh SLUV shirts using BAKED UPPER.

You can already control the ordering of any wearables of the same type, so you could have a Universal that was at skin level, another one at undershirt level, and another one at overcoat level. How does having more sub-types of Universals help?

wait... HOW do you tell the universal that it is at skin level/undershirt level???

i think maybe you misunderstood.  you can sort the universal layers in your appearance editing palette.   however, they are all on the same 'level.'

the problem is, when you save an outfit with multiple stacked unviersal layers, they do NOT remember their order.

i have  a set of universal layers to create fur patterns: 1 base colour 2 colour pattern (seal point, mittens, etc) 3 markings (spots, stripes, splotches, etc etc) 4 a fur texture on top

when i edit all those how i want them, and stack them how i want them, then save the outfit and wear it later...  i usually end up with the top layers under the other layers, and the result can be any number of wrong combinations, including the base layer on top of everything else, so no pattern, markings, or texture at all.

so i kinda want

skin = base

pattern = tattoo

markings = underwear/shirt/pant

texture = outerwear

so they always go on in the right order.

OR, at least for the saved outfit to remember the order of all the clothing/universal layers.

Universals are their own wearable type, so they all live in the same "zone", in the same way that all tattoos live in the same zone and all shirts do. We don't have any way to change ordering of items outside of where their normal zone would be, but you can change ordering of wearables within each zone.

If the ordering info is not being remembered correctly for an outfit, that would be a bug. Best way to report that would be with a separate Jira of bug type (not a feature request) with details on how to reproduce the problem. Note that ordering is only remembered for actual outfits, not for regular folders used to store outfit information. But if you explicitly save your appearance as an outfit and then edit the ordering, that information should be remembered in the future.
