[BUG-229705] Replace events with personal calendar. #7523

How would you like the feature to work?

Proposal is a replacement for the entire event system as it currently exists.

Remove the public event feed entirely.

Events, can only be created by groups and avatars. Durations from an hour to a month.

A group event is seen by all members of that group. Clubs, shopping, etc.

An avatar event is seen by everyone who is friends with that avatar. Birthday party, individual DJ or performer.

Add calendar UI (scrolling list of the next 7 days) Add UI to create/manage group events (a notice with a defined period). Add UI to create/manage avatar events. (as above) Add UI to opt out of specific group / specific avatars event posts. (a checkbox)

The calendar only shows global Linden events, those posted by groups the user is a member of & avatars on their friends list. (viewer queries service for events for each avatar & group periodically, not broadcast like IM /notices).

Result : A 7 day calendar that shows only personally relevant activities that the user as an individual has opted in to.

Looking for events outside of existing group/avatar subscriptions via the search does not show the user any specific event listing, instead lists groups (with simple pending event count) & locations that have events ordered current to future. This forces events to be kept meaningful and limits keyword abuse to group descriptions. Encourages locations to use new event system and use groups socially.

Reminders are offered for all events the viewer knows about at opportune moments. (login, xx mins pror to start, etc)

Why is this feature important to you? How would it benefit the community?

The event system as it stands is a singular public feed that anyone can post to, it's flooded with spam from a tiny minority of venues and has not been fit for purpose or meaningfully integrated into the viewer for years.

Accessibility to the events list is limited to Linden web interface, and in Firestorm via their reintegration of the pre web interface. Neither of these two are particularly good, with the Linden web version being far worse from a usability perspective.

The public feed, accessibility & usability issues creates a situation where only a small minority of places hosting events bother to post to the events , and those that do tend to overwhelm with keyword spam / never ending concurrent "events".

Actually finding out what's happening in SL is for all practical purposes limited to word of mouth, seeing a group notice in the 15 seconds it's on screen, or external websites like Seraphim.

A functional user specific calendar and events gated behind group membership gives groups a social organizing role and the user meaningful agency in both what they see and how they find events.

The focus of event discovery shifts to finding active personally interesting groups.

Spam is self limiting as there no reason to keyword bomb. (A meaningful calendar notice to attract my participation is different from one to attract a search hit).

Flooding is self limiting as user patience will only stretch so far. (Any one group that floods the calendar will end with avatars leaving the group or opting out of their events).

Being presented with reminders about specific personally relevant activities happening today / starting in the next hour / at login would go a long way to creating better engagement both for SL and specific venues.

Issue accepted. We have no estimate when it may be implemented. Please see future release notes for this fix.
