Exactly the same happened to me, 2020-11-21, (Using viewer Firestorm 6.3.9 (58205) May 27 2020 01:20:51 (64bit)).
42/38 shown as worn; not all of the new outfit attached bacuse items remained from the old outfit.
What just happened?
Lately I experienced from time to time, when changing appearance, that I was wearing more than 38 attachments.
Problem can be solved by doing a relog.
What were you doing when it happened?
Changing appearance, opening "Appearance" -> "Wear - Replace Current Outfit"
What were you expecting to happen instead?
Expected my appearance would replaced correct and number of attachments correct.
Other information
OK, observed a side effect of the above, where attachments does not get detached on changing clothing/look/avatar. In my case body part attached to pelvis is still attached on change, where it should not be worn and it gets terrible deformed sticking out of back/behind.
Undeform and relog resets avatar to be correct.
