I feel the easiest way for this to work would be possibly to put in your 4 textures into the region texture interface and having an option to upload a texture to use as a terrain mask. The first texture to the left would be the base (the black part of the mask). Then under the 2nd 3rd and forth you would have a black and white layer mask texture and where ever the white on one texture overlaps the white on another layer those layer textures are mixed. each mask texture would be 512 x 512 ,1024 x 1024 or 2048 x 2048 and would represent the entire sim not to be used as a tiled image.
Why is this feature important to you? How would it benefit the community?
I feel this would really broaden the range of what can be done with landscaping and would allow for using less land impact for things like paths and you could better more accuratley mix terrain textures instead of the random mixing that we have now you could paint beautiful beaches and have the cand look wet along the edges of the sim without trying to piece together mesh beaches that dont look good in most lighting you could put textures on your terrain exactly where you want it have a small pebbly pond and not have to have grass in the bottom of your lake. Something like this can be seen in another game called the sims i think they really do it well i just tried to think of how it could easily be done in secondlife.
