[BUG-231019] Banlines are limited to 190 meters unless the person is specifically put on the banlist #8567

What just happened?

people can just fly right into your parcel even if you have the access turned off, UNLESS they get added to the banlist then the parcel banwalls go up to 10k-ish

What were you doing when it happened?

ensuring my privacy, living my life in the sky for less visual lag, wishing the linden who broke banlines would stop touching things since banlines haven't been a problem since 2006.

What were you expecting to happen instead?

for banlines to remain at 10k+ meters

Other information

This is a privacy concern for 99% of the population of second life, a majority of people like to live in the sky for less visual lag, the linden who's bright idea it was to lower it to 190-ish meters is not thinking about the privacy of their residents and it's extremely shameful. time after time I have seen linden labs make bad decisions like this.

Access list "banlines" extend 50 meters above ground height.

Ban list "banlines" extend 5000 meters above ground height.

This has been the case since LL increased the build height from 768 meters altitude to 4096 meters altitude years ago.

access turned off = banlines used to extend past 4096 meters, but now we have to specifically put people on the ban list for it to extend past 190 meters.

you're claiming banlines have been that low for years? I've been around SL since 2007, you are without a doubt lying. it wasn't until about 2011 or 2012 when linden labs started toying with the banlines height.

Ban line height for "no entry" or "pay to access" (in other words, "allow public access" is turned off, or "allow group access" is turned on, in the parcel options) is the parcel's ground elevation plus 50 meters (except, if the region has been set to "Block Parcel Fly Over" in which case the access controls extend to at least 4096 meters). If a user is explicitly banned by name, the height is the parcel's ground elevation plus 5000 meters.

If you have estate owner or estate manager rights for the region: World -> Region/Estate -> Region -> Enable "Block Parcel Fly Over" This will extend the access ban lines up to 4096m.

you're just being highly unfair at that point because not everyone can afford to own an entire sim, I'm speaking for those who live on PARCELS on MAINLAND AND PRIVATE. how hard is that to understand?

Sorry I wasn't trying to upset you. For your case, you would need to use a security orb to limit entry around your skybox.

here's the problem, I have never had to before. now all of a sudden one day linden labs thinks "hey, let's forcefully change banwall heights without asking the community how they'd feel about it, just so we can cater to aviators in SL" which I imagine is the real reason for them doing so, linden labs as a whole has upset me because of it. when I brought the attention of it to a friend he basically said "well that makes banlines pointless" he also likes to live in the sky, his home is a castle 3000meters in the sky on a private sim... as much as I see "enable fly over" or whatever could have been beneficial, it lacks common sense because anyone "over" the parcel is considered "on" the parcel so THIS OPTION https://i.gyazo.com/8b9ff4605d900e4ccb672eaa1332d0e6.png is being made NULL & VOID, like c'mon...really now...

Lucia and Whirly are correct - by default, a non-allowed avatar who is not explicitly banned from a parcel is still able to access the parcel at ~50m above the land level. This is documented in https://community.secondlife.com/knowledgebase/english/managing-your-parcel-r49/#Section__6_9_1 . This behavior has not changed for at last a decade; there are forum posts dating back to 2010 describing the current behavior.
