Any particular reason why the look of the vertical lines for the targets changed in the update? (Screenshot of the graphical diff, left of the vertical diff line is old version, to the right is the new version).

Yes, because the dashed line is just the line of the participant. The thick bar indicates that the participant "is active". In the image before the UML reads as: Storage, DefectDojo & Elastic are there, but are inactive/dead/exited.
