Differentiating options in Location fields #29

image Hrmm. Where's this UX going? Keeping as a list, or a map-based selector?

Also just noticing that this is not the dropdown for "Start date", but a strange field positioning from the Location field on /create-events

The list you see there is generated from the various geographies that we got from the GeoNames data (http://www.geonames.org/). I'm not sure why there are 4 Londons within the "City" list but there has to be something that makes them distinct and I'll figure that out.

It seems plausible to do a map-based interface for Sites (aka Emplacements) but the main problem with a map-based interface for Areas is that we don't have a canonical list of political boundaries for everything in GeoNames (See #15 for a discussion on that topic).

I'll go ahead and fix the positioning of the labels on that form and make sure everything is clear.

We should use the feature codes - http://www.geonames.org/export/codes.html - so instead of (city) or (subregion) it would be ADM1, ADM2, PPLA, PPL, etc. We generally stick to the A and P feature classes. (separate question how will the geonames data be updated/imported into the CMS to choose from?)

It seems plausible to do a map-based interface for Sites (aka Emplacements) but the main problem with a map-based interface for Areas is that we don't have a canonical list of political boundaries for everything in GeoNames (See #15 for a discussion on that topic).

Two things on this - 1) We should also display the GeonameID as well as the feature code because...

2) Many countries have numerous entries with the same Geoname and feature code - there are over 20 entries for Tudun Wada (PPL) in the Nigeria Geonames dataset for example.

As of right now there is no way to see the entry on a map to have a quick check of it’s the right entry or not. Sometimes even a quick check isn't possible and I've had to go through the long/lat of entries with the same name to find the one that matches entry want (by getting driving/walking directions from another long/lat that I know the site is near). Obviously this is mainly an issue with Sites as Areas (ADM1, ADM2, and sometimes ADM3, ADM4) are far fewer in number per country and much easier to determine. Being able to check all of this in the CMS this might be too much as of right now (if so add to wishlist!) – but having the GeonameID will be a major help
