Extraterm does not work on windows if you don't have a wsl distribution installed #333

The default terminal is automatically set to wsl, so when trying to start on windows without it installed you wont be able to. I had to install a distro just to be able to launch it for the first time to switch the default to powershell 7. I'd suggest the default be switched to cmd or powershell on windows.

I just tried Extraterm on a clean Windows 10 machine and didn't see this problem. It correctly didn't detect WSL and put cmd.exe in the list followed by powershell.

It is possible that you've got an old config from an old Extraterm. After starting Extraterm you can edit the sessions in the Setting tab and remove any bad WSL ones.

i tried in windows 11 same issue cant launch the Extraterm

If Extraterm simply refuses to start up, try deleting the ipc.run file in ~/.config/extraterm (Linux) or ipc.run somewhere in your APPDATA folder on Windows. Then try to start Extraterm again.

i have been looking for a fix because on my windows machne Extraterm doesnt want to start up at all. This didn't fix it. When i try to open it, it creates the extratermqt folder in appdata though

In the appdata you should be able to find a *.log. Can you add it here somehow?

There were some small changes to WSL support in 0.71.0. Can someone check if this is still a problem?
