As shown in the screenshot above, Windows 10 v20H2 will reach the end of service on 2023-05-09, which means all users are recommended to upgrade their Windows to 21H2 (build 19044) or above.
Thus, I think it's fine to assume that all users are using Windows 21H2 (build 19044) or above after 2023-05-09. Users who refuse to upgrade their Windows are not our target audience.
Currently, the WSL setup guides are still complicated because some features only work on new Windows versions. For example, installing WSL using
wsl --install
requires Windows 10 build 19041+ or Windows 11, and native Linux GUI support requires Windows 10 build 19044+ or Windows 11.From this page (https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/release-health/release-information), we know that Windows 10 build 19041 was released on 2020-05-27 and reached the end of service on 2021-12-14, and Windows 10 build 19044 was released on 2021-11-16.
After some time (maybe one year or two), I think we can safely assume that our target audiences are using Windows 10 build 19044+ or Windows 11, then we can simply the WSL setup guides by removing many long paragraphs.
