Dear Professor Ghosh,

I hope you are doing well. My name is Hashim A. Khalid, and I have recently graduated from my high school in the Netherlands. I have found myself fascinated with your group's research and its goal to tailor mental health treatments to individuals. My best friend suffered severe mental health issues back in 2021, and scanning for optimal treatments instead of blindly experimenting could have saved valuable time he sadly didn't have. For the past 3 years, I have been advocating for mental health awareness and been researching novel treatments for mental health issues. Recently, I have spent a year interning at WARN-D, an app in development to predict and prevent depression using physiological data. Considering I will be in Cambridge, MA until the end of January 2025, I was seeking the opportunity for an unpaid on-site internship between August 2024 - January 2025.

Aligning very well with the Sensein's own research, my proposal was to design a dynamic learning tool/game for students which can adapt based on EEG information, optimizing it to suit the student's individual needs. By doing so, studying languages, for example, which involves strenuous tasks for students, such as learning words by heart, can be turned into a tailored process which reduces anxiety and stress caused by studying. This tool could not only help students with their mental health, but also enhance their studying process, achieving better results.

However, I would be honoured to work on any project focused on mental health within the Senseable Intelligence Group. Please do let me know if anything comes to mind suitable for a relatively experienced, but most importantly incredibly passionate, young mental health advocate.

I have attached my resume, and I would be glad to provide a reference from the previous professor for whom I interned, Dr. Eiko Fried, where I also specialised in mental health research. PS: I am registered as a student at Leiden University, which I say because at my last internship it was a must that I was registered at a university institution.

I realise how extraordinarily busy you are, adn I thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely, Hashim A. Khalid h.khalid@umail.leidenuniv.nl
