upcoming changes to planetScope imagery #86

from planet mailing list:

We wanted to give you a heads up on a few key improvements coming next month that will make it easier to search and download next-generation PlanetScope data. There is no action you need to take today.

But first some great news: as of this month, you will see cleaner, more consistent PlanetScope imagery in the catalog across a number of dimensions. From fewer artifacts, to sharper visual imagery, to improved spectral band alignment, we’ve achieved an order of magnitude improvement in image quality that is being delivered to your data pipelines today. We think that’s a pretty cool thing!

So what’s coming up? As of March 1, 2022, all available PlanetScope data will be available within our APIs, Planet Explorer, and integrations via a new item type: PSScene. This new item type will contain the new 8-band data and will be radiometrically calibrated to Sentinel-2 instead of RapidEye.

These improvements will give you richer, more consistent data, but it will require a few adjustments on your side, like updating search filters. But don’t worry, as March 1 draws closer, we will provide ample resources for how to make the most of these and more updates, while maintaining the stability of your workflows.
