DMC4 Swapping Characters problem #364

PLEASE DO NOT INSTANTLY CLOSE THIS I KNOW THERE ARE SIMILAR ISSUES WHICH HAVE BEEN CLOSED BUT I HAVEN'T FOUND ONE THAT ANSWERS MY QUESTION YET, THANK YOU

I'm trying to switch characters in DMC4 without having to use arcade mode, but no matter what I try, the "Player 1" option under actors doesn't actually function, it's permanently greyed out. I know that DDMK DMC3 let you switch characters mid-mission (you just had to reload the area) without using arcade mode, and I would like to know if I can do that in DMC4. Is player 1 always locked to the character(s) of the mode they're playing? If I'm playing through Nero/Dante but I want to play as Lady or Vergil, am I just stuck as Nero/Dante? If I'm playing through a Nero section as Dante, Dante can't use the grapple points, could I not set my actor to Nero and reload the room, instead of having to just completely give up and change my arcade mode settings? Am I just missing something?

(One other thing, sorry if I seemed a little rude, I'm aware that the title of my issue is phrased like one of the many already closed issues, and I just wanted to clarify and not risk being written off as something that has already been solved.)

Player 1 is always the default character so it's always greyed out, maybe there's a trainer or cheat table that might force change your P1 character while playing but i have no way to confirm this
