These articles suggest that opponent 3pt percentage is out of a teams control, but 3pa pct is not:
Method used: for each team in the competition, plot 3p% of the first half of the season to 3p% in the second half of the season, do same for 3pa%.
If a team can influence either one, then we'd expect a strong correlation between the first half and the second half of the season.
Study by kenpom shows that team CAN affect the 3pa%, but not 3p% so advice is to force less 3pa and don't worry about 3p% defense.
