relation between 3 point shooting and offensive efficiency #4

Erik Braal:

Verder kwam ik dit tegen op een blog: 3-point shooting is trending up in the NBA. 3-point shooting (and in particular, corner threes) correlate highly with overall offensive efficiency and team efficiency inside the arc.

Heb je een referentie?

Kan je die correlatie ook in Oostenrijk zien?

Hypothesis

A higher ratio of corner three pointers made per total number of field goals attempted will result in higher offensive rating.

Explorations

Calculate offensive rating and c3 fgm ratio for all games in the competition, scatterplot this and perform a simple linear regression analysis.

Done. This not really show a strong correlation. Shea summarized for all games and then investigated correlation for each team. I did not do that; but it's worth investigating.

Plot points per shot (already done) - if this is not really better than other shots on the floor, it might indicate that the c3 has additional benefits to being an efficient shot.

Further thoughts

We could extend investigation this for other shots?

Take 'm or make 'm? An offense that likes to take the c3, but makes them at a lower rate might still benefit from the spacing it yields; hence taking the shot more often might already help an offensive.
