That is a valid point. But we are accounting for many different numbers, like overseas numbers, which may not have the same rules or fax numbers. We cannot account for all the different rules for all possible contact numbers in the world and parse accordingly. Hence, we focused on user freedom and discretion.

Perhaps phone numbers could be extended to more than 3 digits as I believe that 3 digit phone numbers are reserved for emergency services and should not technically be in the contacts of a journalist as the persons in the contact list are for this purpose stated in 1.2 "Contact these persons for interviews or collaboration."
