I have the complete version of BTStack GPS and it connect with my external
GPS receiver but when I open TOmTOm it doesn't work...

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
OK. thanks for trying. In the new extension, I've patched
"isGPSHardwareAvailable" to just return YES.That would have been a clean
approach. Anyway, I'll make another one that makes TomTom believe it is running
on an iPhone (when running on an iPod).

That seems to have fixed that problem! I will be testing for a short drive
later, but I'm not seeing the "Connect to GPS" message at all now.

Original comment by mikeb...@gmail.com on 5 Jul 2010 at 8:39

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
Same here with me too. No more "Connect to GPS" message! Thanks a lot matthias!
NOw to the next problem... XD

mikebock, do you often get greyed screen due to lost of signal?

Original comment by winstont...@gmail.com on 6 Jul 2010 at 12:49

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
@mikebock & @winstontanjonhan: thanks for testing. I'll assume that that's a
useable solution for TomTom and include it in the next update. I'm wondering if
I should write to TomTom's customer support and complain that it contains
hard-coded application behavior based on the device type, which is not
recommended by Apple's development guidelines... :) TomTom should purley rely
on the "GPS" capability and not make his own assumptions based on model.

@winstontanjonhan: Yep, sure do. I sometimes get the "Poor GPS signal"
message now, but I assumed it was due to my old, cheap PalmOne GPS unit. But
come to think of it, I don't recall getting that with Tomtom v 1.0. It's
interesting that you are getting that too.

@matthias.ringwald: That would surely be poor app dev if that's what the TT
team has done.

Original comment by mikeb...@gmail.com on 6 Jul 2010 at 1:12

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
I received the "Poor GPS signal" about every 30-45 seconds on my drive in this
morning. This is way more than what I got on Tomtom 1.0, so something else
must be different.

As another point, Copilot doesn't even pick up a location (getting "Determining
Current Position"), but seems to see that there is a GPS device.

Original comment by mikeb...@gmail.com on 6 Jul 2010 at 4:28

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
@mikebock: I'm using Holux M-1000 and I'm getting the same message as you. If
both of us are getting the same experience, shouldn't it be caused by the TT?

Why can't TT code properly? Arghh...

Original comment by winstont...@gmail.com on 7 Jul 2010 at 2:59

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
Yes, I agree that it is acting strangely. What I'd like to see is the
"stability" (meaning no "Poor GPS signal") of Tomtom 1.0 without the "Connect
to GPS" flash scrolling. Somehow it seems that this would be possible with
BTstack, but maybe not. How can we make TT think it's connected to the tomtom
gps car kit mount?

Original comment by mikeb...@gmail.com on 7 Jul 2010 at 8:35

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
BTstack GPS only connects and receives the GPS data from the external device
and converts them into the internal CoreLocation format. GPS quality is part of
the GPS output. So the first question would be what's quality reported by the
GPS, is it really ok or really "poor"? Not sure what to do/offer. BTstack GPS
could pretend that the GPS signal is always perfect, but somehow this doesn't
seem like actual solution. ... I'll try to display the signal quality on the
main screen, so we can get some data on that in the next version.

Original comment by matthias.ringwald@gmail.com on 8 Jul 2010 at 7:28

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
That would be a good idea. From my itouch Tomtom 1.3 says "Poor GPS signal",
Copilot drops out occassionally (but seems to work better), and Navigon doesn't
complain at all and seems to work the best.

Feedback after one week:
Ended up buying Navigon 1.6 and went on a 175 mile round trip this past
weekend. BTStack worked perfectly on my iTouch and PalmOne GPS. It was
virtually perfect. This combo works much better than TomTom 1.3.

I also bought CoPilot (I couldn't pass up the $5 price). However that didn't
work as well. For the most part it read the gps signal, but occassionally it
would lose the signal (Determing Current Position) or would put me on a
different street or direction than I was on. For a GPS that you have to rely
on, I wouldn't recommend the combo, but as a back up $5 is worth the price.

So, thanks again Matthias for a nice utility!

Hi Matthias, i just purchased the full version of btstack gps. i have my ipod
connected to my tomtom cradle, but btstack does not detect the tomtom. under
"devices" it stays on "searching". my ipod's bluetooth is already disabled.
please advise.

i have 3rd gen ipod touch on 3.1.3 firmware.

@jeffrey.liu11 hi. as far as I know, the TomTom cradle provides GPS to the
iPhone/iPod and it is used by the TomTom software and it is connected via
Apple's proprietary Extended Accessory protocol via Bluetooth. So TomTom app
should work with TomTom cradle out of the box without Jailbreak. What do you
do? Try to use the TomTom cradle with other navigation software?

Original comment by matthias.ringwald@gmail.com on 13 Jul 2010 at 7:07

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
@jeffrey.liu11 Have you installed the TomTom Car Kit Tool app? Does it
recognize the cradle?

Original comment by mikeb...@gmail.com on 13 Jul 2010 at 11:32

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
I have tomtom 1.4 app installed in my iPod. When I connect my iPod to the
tomtom cradle and open the tomtom app, it says I need to connect to a gps.
After some searching around I think it's because I need a Bluetooth stack. I
have this btstack a try by the btstack does not "see" my tomtom device. It just
searches forever.

Original comment by jeffrey....@gmail.com on 13 Jul 2010 at 3:33

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
@jeffrey.liu11 Please try the TomTom Car Kit Tool from TomTom with Apple's
Bluetooth turned on as mikebock suggested. TomTom's iPhone/iPod GPS cradle
should work with an unmodified iOS - this also means it does not work with any
other computer or smarthone as it implements Apple's proprietary External
Accessory protocol.

Please contact TomTom for support with the TomTom cradle. If you don't need
BTstack GPS (as you don't have a standard BT GPS), please email me at
iphone@ringwald.ch for a refund.

hello matthias... here's my issue... (which for all of about 3 minutes wasn't
one....)
i've got an IPT 2g just started running iOS4 (annoying already) and it's JB
using redsn0w... i've got a holux gpslim240 which worked great with roqy and
navigon while i had 3.1.2... but i had to restore a couple days ago and just
went with 4... ANYWAYs. the first time i loaded btsack up it found my device
and just hund at connecting... just randomly i decided i try replacing the dlyb
and the next time after a respring it worked perfectly! i was about to go onto
cydia to purchase when i REBOOTED and tried one more time... now it's back to
just hanging at "connecting"!!! anything? please! thanks... this looks like a
great app...

odd... i would've deleted my above comment /\ /\ but just in case there's an
off chance that someone else runs into this... well it appears that having
roqyBT installed still was interfering... after the uninstall seems to be
working... i guess i'll buy after all! thanks.

eighto: good to know, as I was contemplating upgrading to iOS4 with my touch
2G. The only thing holding me back was how BTstack and Navigon would work, and
it sounds like it does.

@mikebock BTstack runs fine on OS 4.0 as far as I can tell. However, I'm rather
disappointed with 4.0 on my iPhone 3G, it just got slower although I didn't
enable extra features like Multitasking. So, I wouldn't recommend 4.0 for non
latest-gen devices (3GS, latest iPod)... I'll probably downgrade the 3G if
possible when I can get an iPhone 4G

Try to disable the spotlight search - the 3G should run better with iOS 4.0 now.

Is tomtom automatically supposed to connect to the reciever or do i need to do
something to make it connect?

Original comment by athomas...@gmail.com on 23 Jul 2010 at 5:20

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
@athomas002 Hi. TO use BTstack GPS, you start the app and connect to your BT
GPS. After that, you see your location on the map. Now, leave BTstack GPS with
the HOME button and start TomTom (or any other location app). It should pick up
the GPS location. If this doesn't work, please verify that the BTstack icon in
the status bar stays on for more than 10 seconds after you leave BTstack GPS.
If it goes away although you have a valid license, please try to remove or
reinstall Backgrounder.

Original comment by matthias.ringwald@gmail.com on 23 Jul 2010 at 6:32

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
Do you need backgrounder to run btstack and a gps app?

Original comment by athomas...@gmail.com on 23 Jul 2010 at 6:38

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
no. BTstack GPS does "native Backgrounding", but I've had several people for
which Backgrounder broke it - still don't know. Basically, both work together
fine. If you have it installed, check that you select "Native Backgrounding"
for BTstack GPS.

I'm wondering as well how to get a license. I have gone to the app in cydia,
and clicked the button that says "purchase for 5$" But it has failed to load
every time. Is this just a problem with the cydia servers at the moment? I'll
try again later tonight, I'm am looking forward to this application very much.
