General Discussion #48

Closed baughmann closed 2 years ago

baughmann commented 3 years ago

This issue is for general discussion that is not really a bug report or anything else. Anyone can post here for any reason.

Delitants commented 3 years ago

@baughmann I use a magic mouse and keyboard via the Bluetooth card and keep experiencing the freezes that you guys are talking about. The frequency is so random that I haven't been able to find any pattern to it. There is also nothing in the system log. Is your wife not having the freezes? Does she use a USB Apply keyboard and mouse? I could try that for a while.

Oh, one more observation. I was charging my MacBook Pro via one of the USB-C ports from the back of the motherboard. The IO kept freezing once/twice per hour until I unplugged that cable. Not sure if it is related.

Yes it does, very random, my BT magic and keyboard just stop responding and BT icon gets crossed. Have to reset he PC. Super annoying.

baughmann commented 3 years ago

@Neolo @idioma @jiribanas Has anyone had the freeze occur when using a keyboard with a USB dongle or cable?

I don't have any mac type KB with dongle. I have PCIE Fenvi BT+Wifi and official Apple mouse and KB.

That’s what I have. I use a Microsoft Sculpt wireless desktop with USB dongle connected to the 2.0 ports.

j0hnny8rav0 commented 3 years ago

Hi, I’m currently using the keychron k2 keyboard and not experiencing this issue. The keyboard has wired and wireless option and works fine for me. I also use a glorious mode o wireless mouse it can also use wired too and haven’t had issue.

It may be worth opening a new discussion thread just for this specific freezing issue.

Not sure if this is related, but it froze three times today for me. The last time it did, I found this in the log after reboot:

baughmann commented 3 years ago

Agreed, I will open an issue and tag everyone when I’m at my desk next.

Appears this is a problem on real macs too since updating to Big Sur. Someone said an NVRAM and SMC reset did them good: https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/667376?page=6

baughmann commented 3 years ago

@Neolo @idioma @jiribanas And anyone else:

I have opened #51 regarding this and will begin investigating. Please chime in there with any relevant details.

hellojere commented 3 years ago

@baughmann, I moved the conversation from https://github.com/baughmann/designaire-z390-intel-i9-9900k-opencore/issues/51 here, as it's not related to the issue itself.

I've tried with all 4 EFI backups I have and they all hang the same way; apple logo appears but the loading bar gets stuck in the very beginning.

The BIOS reverted automatically to "Last working copy", which gets me to the Apple logo, but loading the manually saved BIOS configuration does not boot at all - that worked just fine before. I'm also running an older BIOS, as that worked fine before, so might be time to upgrade to F9i - or even F9j.

Btw, any links to how to reset the NVRAM on this setup?

hellojere commented 3 years ago

@baughmann Upgrading the EFI to the latest did not work by itself, but straight after upgrading the BIOS to F9i and loading the BIOS config from this repo it booted just fine.

Now even the automatic updates are finally showing up on System Preferences, which I never managed to get to work before. However, now the SIP is enabled again, so need to get that disabled (TotalSpaces requires this).

Anyone running the macOS 11.5.1 yet?

EDIT: The OpenCore install guide's SIP section had been updated, and apparently the automatic updates have an issue with disabling the SIP. Just disabled it and the issue is back. Not a big deal though, only macOS updates seem to be missing, and it's not a big deal to download the installer manually through AppStore when the time comes. Happy Hackintosher here again, thanks!

baughmann commented 3 years ago

Sorry for the radio silence @hellojere I didn’t mean to leave you hanging. I’m glad you got it worked out!

hellojere commented 3 years ago

Anyone facing issues with Bluetooth audio stuttering?

I had this, but that was caused by a weak signal. In general the signal seems to be nowhere near as good as it is with real Apple devices, especially with some devices like the Wacom tablet.

Shaninnik commented 3 years ago

@baughmann I just wanted to say big thanks for this repo. Worked almost as is for me with i9 9900k + Z390 Aorus Pro WiFi, only thing I had to change was USBPorts (was getting prohibitory sign when starting install), I just copied mine from existing clover install and it worked. Seamlessly upgraded from clover + Catalina to BigSur, no issues so far.

baughmann commented 3 years ago

@Shaninnik Don't thank me, thank the OC creators. I just made an EFI for myself.

Since you're using a different mobo, it makes sense you had to use a different USBPorts.kext. Could you send it to me so I can post it here for those who have the same board? Maybe also use some relevant Google-friendly words in the commend that you attach it to for future Googlers?

Shaninnik commented 3 years ago

@baughmann yes, but you also open sourced it and saved me, and other people a lot of time, that worth a thank.

Attaching my USBPorts.kext for Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Pro WiFi. I've been only using it for a day with OpenCore but so far it seems that everything that I need works. (top 4 USB 2.0 ports, half of the USB 3.0 ports, 4 PC case USB ports) At a minimum it can be used to swap your USBPorts.kext to install the system and then tweaked if necessary. It was the only thing I've changed to get it running. I also installed F12k BIOS available for my mobo before attempting anything.

USBPorts.kext.zip

arashster commented 3 years ago

With regards to the bluetooth issue, interestingly, resetting the NVRAM (pressing space at the Opencore boot menu and picking reset nvram) a few times fixed it.

MjayNL commented 2 years ago

All, I have updated to the latest OC and can confirm it works with Big Sur 11.5

Are you on OC 0.7.3?

baughmann commented 2 years ago

@MjayNL Negative, still on 0.7.1 (the version in this repo)

jahwookie commented 2 years ago

More a hardware question this time, but one that could probably only be answered with a group like this...

I was moving my self-built Intel tower a couple of feet across the space under my desk, and because that entailed unplugging everything, I flipped the switch on the power supply, so that the LEDs on the motherboard all went dark.

When I plugged all the cables back in and restarted, the machine found the boot drive, but could not move forward, instead flashing a message that the BIOS had been reset. Thanks to the series of screenshots @Nick Baughman @.***> was good enough to post a while back, I was able to get back to square one and boot back into a normal running state.

Can anyone suggest why this happened? I thought the BIOS was designed to survive a complete power down. Does this maybe mean that little round watch battery on the m'board has gone dead, or something along those lines?

Thanks in any case for leaving the recovery aids posted! John W.

That is super weird… I can say I’ve turned off my PSU and unplugged my computer several times since installing macOS, sometimes leaving it unplugged for hours. I’ve also lost power in the middle of working. I’ve never had the BIOS config reset though…

That said, the CMOS battery shouldn’t be bad yet, as your mobo is probably only a few years old.

Mighty strange…

Published a new version of the EFI after doing a bunch of cleanup etc., etc. Let me know if you all have any problems with it.

JonMcL commented 2 years ago

I'm gonna give your build a try because I've been having random freezes with Big Sur and my own EFI build.

Question, on 10 April 2021 you stated:

Fixed USB port issue occurring after upgrade to 11.3 by re-disabling USBInjectAll.kext, re-enabling USBPorts.kext (this mobo's USB map) and setting Kernel > Quirks > XhciPortLimit to 0

But new release 11 October 2021 seems to have USBInjectAll enabled? Deliberate or ?

jordanurbs commented 2 years ago

2 issues for me:

1-my main machine is the exact same hardware as yours. I accidentally upgraded to big sur 11.6 and so it stopped booting; but so did my backup boot disk, for some reason. So I replaced the backup EFI with your new EFI, re-configured the config.plist, even flashed your BIOS settings to make sure... and still won't boot anywhere. Very bizarre. Any ideas? Haven't tried verbose mode yet.

2- my second machine (new) is the same hardware except no dGPU, just using the integrated graphics. I enabled iGPU on BIOS but otherwise the macOS installer won't even load (some times it loads about halfway on the apple logo, other times not at all). I've tried using debug mode and verbose and it does not create any files.

Curious if anyone else had problems with the upgrade or it's just me. Have really appreciated you keeping this up to date and your support.

Thanks.

I've had a similar issue with one of my machines. It freezes at the Apple logo right before the loading bar is about to start. Reverting to the previous version worked for me (0.7.1).

It worked on two other machines I have.

I'm hardly an expert, but you might have to go through your own USB port mapping procedure. Not all of the ports are enabled and not at all speeds. You could also just try moving the USB mouse & keyboard to other ports until they start to work. I ended up disabling USBInjectAll, and using my own USBPorts kext. (based off the one I created for Catalina and OC 0.5.x) I made it with Hackintool and it was a slow and paintful process of trial and error. I also don't have all ports working at all speeds, but it works for me.

Also, make sure all your BIOS settings match the screenshots provided in this repo.

JonMcL commented 2 years ago

I'm gonna give your build a try because I've been having random freezes with Big Sur and my own EFI build.

A quick update. I've been successfully using Big Sur (11.6) for 3 days now. No freezes or crashes. Only restarted a few times. I did as much stress testing as I could come up with, particularly with leaving music playing through Bluetooth headset and copying large TM sparse images to and from a USB 3.1 drive encosure (operating at 10gbps).

I had previously had lots of problems with Big Sur and OC 0.7.4 (and 0.7.3). I was using new builds of OC, I tried upgrading my old build, I also tried the previous release of this repo. I tried my old F8 BIOS and the current F9j BIOS (don't use it!). All resulted in freezes with Big Sur, usually within an hour, sometimes 2 or 3 hours in.

Now I'm using this repo's current release, with my own USBPorts kext (and disabled USBInjectAll), AND the F9i BIOS. I don't know if it's the perfection of this repo's config and research or the F9i BIOS, but everythign is rock solid so far.

First full work day and hopefully all goes well. If it does, I'll tweak for overclocking again tomorrow :)

Thank you for provided us with a great working baseline!

Uh oh... No, it's not deliberate... I completely rebuilt the config.plist using ProperTree. PT enabled it by default and I did not disable it again. Strange, as this latest release fixed the USB issues my wife's machine and I have noticed no problems.

It's also possible that the USBPorts.kext that I created is incorrect. Do you have the same mobo as I do?

@arashster @jordanurbs @djresal The above could be a reason for your problems. I will need to make a new release to re-disable USBInjectAll.kext. I'm keeping it in the repo just in case others may have USB issues and need to disable USBPorts and enable USBInjectAll to get their systems limping.

JonMcL commented 2 years ago

It's also possible that the USBPorts.kext that I created is incorrect. Do you have the same mobo as I do?

I think so :) Designare Z390. I can attach the file or a Hackintool screenshot if that's helpful.

My (limited) understanding is that USBInjectAll can inject all the USB ports (and sub-ports) but only 15 can be active at any one time. So if you leave USBInjectAll enabled, and you don't "light up" more than 15 ports, you are all good. The problems come in when you start plugging devices into ports and you end up going over 15 (with sub-ports included, a USB 3 hub will likely "light up" the USB 2 sub-ports). So a USBPorts kext lets you specifically choose which ports and sub-ports are enabled on startup. Plugging a device into a port that is not enabled means that it won't work. But at least you know which one will work and which ones don't.

So if my understanding is true, it's just a coincidence that all of your wife's USB ports work correctly. In @djresal situation, where his mouse and keyboard aren't working, it's likely because he has too many devices spread out across too many ports.

Anyway, my understanding of all this could be wrong :)

jordanurbs commented 2 years ago

@jordanurbs lol download the latest config.plist and paste it into your EFI/OC folder and let me know if it works

20211018_140041.jpg

Did I miss a step? I didn't delete usbinjectall.kext

jordanurbs commented 2 years ago

@baughmann I kept my original config.plist and deleted the USBInjectAll.kext from the OC folder, then used ProperTree to do a clean snapshot... it works now, my machine boots again! On 11.6. At this stage I have no idea which one of your repo versions I am using.. but at least it works. Thanks for your support.

Now if I can only figure out this new machine. Should there be any changes to anything if there is no dGPU?

baughmann commented 2 years ago

@jordanurbs Mighty weird.... those errors suggest OC and the config.plist are out of sync (i.e. on different versions). That's not a good sign.

To be honest, I'm not sure. Is it the same mobo?

jordanurbs commented 2 years ago

Same mobo, same everything just no GPU except from the mobo. I've copied my exact EFI folder from my main machine to this new one on the Big Sur 11.6 USB installer disk, and it just freezes about 1/5 the way through the loading bar

Thread here

baughmann commented 2 years ago

@jordanurbs Check @JonMcL 's comment in your issue on this subject. Would you mind removing the logs from your above comment and just linking to the issue instead? Kinda clogs this thread a little bit.

Also, I updated the latest release to re-disable USBInjectAll. Seems to work well on my machine, but I wasn't having problems even when it was enabled. Can someone else verify that it works for them? I think @jordanurbs May have accidentally gotten his EFI folders mixed around, or maybe needed to clear NVRAM or something because it looked like the config.plist his EFI was using and his OC version might have been out-of-sync

As a side note, has anyone here looked into running macOS on KVM or QEMU or another hypervisor? Will need to find a longer-term solution to do iOS development once Intel chips are no longer supported. Been meaning to get back into using Linux a bit more anyways

jahwookie commented 2 years ago

Years ago I tried running a couple of different OS's in KVM. Never found they ran fast enough to consider them useful, but the virtuality tech is said to be much closer to directly accessing the machine these days.

@jahwookie Yeah that's what I'd heard, but I have yet to see anything concrete. I'm no guru so I'd definitely want something easy to set up and maintain.

At first glance, these virtualization solutions don't seem to have much of a leg up on native. They don't seem to get you away from OpenCore. In fact, them seem to add another dependency on another volunteer-only group (at least, in the case of OSX-KVM). Maybe as the end of the world [of native hackintosh] approaches, there will be more focus put on better virtualization.

@jahwookie Did I hear correctly that you use an AORUS Z390 with this repo's EFI? Did you have to make any major modifications?

This refurbished Designare I bought has some defects, might swap it out for the z390 AORUS Pro Wi-Fi

@jordanurbs I have Z390 Aorus pro wifi, my usbports.kext attached earlier in this thread (it won’t start with the one from repo). Not a single freeze or crash or any other major issue in 2 months, and I use it for work (iOS/Android dev) as my mbp is too slow and I didn’t want to upgrade until Apple release new 16in.

One minor issue that I am having is that sometimes audio stutters when using usb audio interface 🤔

@Shaninnik thanks :) to the Aorus Pro I go!
