Contact merge page wildcard search fails without error message

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Open Contact Merge tab
2. Search for "*"

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Expected many search results (or an error message saying not to do that.)
Got an empty page with the text "null"

What version of the packages are you using?
contactsandorgs 1.83

Duplicated this in 2.0.1 as well. It stems from using the built in Salesforce 
search, which doesn't allow straight wildcard searches, but instead requires at 
least two characters. You'll see the same behavior if you also enter one 
character and the wildcard.  A two character plus wildcard search will return a 
blank table set, which would be the expected behavior.
