Might be solved by splitting each mediaobject, but I haven't tried it.

There are several other paired graphics.

Splitting the mediaobject will let the second one show below the first, not next to it as the text assumes.

https://tdg.docbook.org/tdg/5.0/mediaobject.html indicates that multiple imageobject are alternative presentations of the same information and that only the first alternative that works should be used.
