2018 Goals — August Update #17

August is gone — hello, September! 👋🏼 We’ve experienced eight months of 2018. Time to do some monthly reflecting to see what I’ve achieved in relation to my goals.

Achievements

Here, I’ll share the goal followed by the related achievement of the month after the arrow.

Financial:

I’m honestly shocked at how this happened…I had mentioned doing some math and calculating how much I could save to be able to hit my goal in time. I did some budgeting and calculated how much extra money I could try to put towards my goal. We’ll see what happens but wow — crazy to see these numbers. If I can keep this up (probably not because I have a lot of trips coming up), I could potentially save up to $12,000 by Dec. I would be thrilled to do that! I will keep you updated!

Physical:

This wasn’t an actual goal I wrote down but a notable achievement for me personally. One week ago, my trainer has put in my program to do a 1 set of 210 lbs as many reps as possible. I had my workout partner coach me through it. I told him I’d do 5 reps, then he’d tell me how many more to do. It pushed me farther than I would have pushed myself! I hit 20 reps. Way more than I thought I could do! My trainer was surprised by this too and told me he wanted to push it to the next level. So this week, I did 255 lbs for 4 sets of 3 reps each. And granted he said this was a deload week. Who knows what he’ll have me attempt next week 😝

Professional:

I am so pumped! The title of my talk is “Step Up Your Portfolio Game => Use Gatsby.js, a Blazing-Fast React Static Site Generator”. It’s geared towards beginners who want to learn React to build their portfolio and hopefully help them get a better job!

I’m really excited and thankful I have this opportunity. I’ve never been to Desert Code Camp but I’ve heard good things. This month I’ll need to put together my slide deck and do a few practice runs to get myself ready.

My goal is to reach more people on Twitter to share helpful content and engage in topics related to web development. I’m excited that I’m making good progress in reaching more people. If I can average about 100+ new followers over the next 4 months, I’ll be able to hit my goal! 🤞🏼

I had mentioned the meeting with Quincy (the founder of freeCodeCamp) that I was going to have last month. Well, we met, he onboarded me, and I’ve been helping review PRs!

This has been exciting because a lot of contributors are first-timers and I get to participate in making sure they have a pleasant first experience. It’s rewarding to be able to volunteer my time and help grow freeCodeCamps’s curriculum and docs. When we work together as a community, we can achieve great things.

Updates

There isn’t a lot of updates to share but here are the few.

Intellectual

This month, my co-worker Sean Jun and discussed where we want to be in five years. I told him that I’d like to be a “Senior” developer. I don’t know exactly that means but I do know that I want to be considered a JavaScript expert and have a solid understanding of programming fundamentals. Being the “goal-oriented” ENFJ, I decided to create a roadmap. I’m basing a lot of on freeCodeCamp’s curriculum and P1xt’s Computer Science and Web Development — comprehensive guide.

You’ll see there’s only Tier 1. I’ve decided to not overwhelm myself and go “level by level”. I’ll be adding more after I finish this Tier. My hope is to finish Tier 1 before the end of 2018 — which is definitely manageable.

Professional

The same co-worker Sean Jun convinced me to start a YouTube channel. I had talked about starting a blog but he gave a lot of reasons why I should try YouTube. I agreed with his points so I gave it a shot.

I’ve created 3 videos and have 22 subscribers so far. Those are by no means impressive at all, but I believe it shows potential. I’m going to continue making videos. Sean and I discussed recording 100 videos and then reassessing whether it is successful or not.

If this goes well, I’d love to write courses for Egghead.io. I look up to the instructors on their platform and respect what they’re trying to provide developers with. We will see what happens 👀

That’s all I got! Thank you for reading. I hope this inspires you to take time to reflect on your own goals and applaud yourself for what you’ve achieved. 🙏🏼

See you next month! 👋🏼
