Most of these changes are pretty safe and mechanical.

These two commits probably deserve a closer look, though:

9e35348 fixes unused local variables. I deleted some dead code, but could be convinced to preserve it somehow if we think it might be useful.
bce0d45 fixes some string encoding. I think the tests would fail if I got this wrong, though.
