EDIT: I apologize, I was reading over some mod threads and found you talking about the issue under Kerbal Foundries. I see that this is not fixable, I'm not sure how to close this, since there's no use talking about it.
So with textures unlimited installed, + kerbal foundries + SSTU, Icons in the VAB/SPH appear dark.

I've tried standard rendering (with the latest version), DX11, OpenGL, all the same. Reflections also appear to have issues - very reflective in VAB, then nothing when launched, and then nothing when reverted to VAB.
In settings, turning up editor ambient light boost to 100% fixes the icons, however reflections still die the moment I load into editor, even on an entirely clean install with strictly SSTU and TU
After a little more testing, it seems that "Render quality" in the game settings is what went wrong. I had it set to "simple" which appears to kill whatever makes reflections work. Boosting it to Good and above made it work.
Although there's still the issue of the part icons being dark - boosting ambient lighting in editor works to fix it, but it makes the vessel itself brighter than normal instead.
