on mac shift,option,command,ctrl all return symbols for left hand key #369

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago

A user of my software wants to discriminate between left and right command,
shift... keys. Pyglet claims to do so, but actually the symbols returned
from the key events always correspond to the left hand key (key.LOPTION,
key.LCTRL...). It doesn't seem to be a hardware problem (pygame is
correctly discriminating).

The following code demonstrates the problem under;
 Mac OS X (10.5.5)
 Intel iMac
 aluminium (wired) keyboard

#----------------
import pyglet
from pyglet.window import key

window = pyglet.window.Window()

@window.event
def on_key_press(symbol, modifiers):
    print symbol, key.symbol_string(symbol)

pyglet.app.run()

Support for differentiating between left and right modifier keys has only
existed since Mac OS 10.3 (Panther), and
handling this issue is still pretty tricky.

Basically, you need to use the NX_DEVICELCTLKEYMASK and related private
constants (I believe they are buried in
the IOKit headers), and compare them with the modifier bit field. They are
several pitfalls associate with this
process however, so I will see if I can dig up my old code which handles it.

I've clarified in the programming guide (r2417) right-side modifiers are not
supported in OS X (a limitation of
Carbon).
