Localize MonoDevelop to a new language

MonoDevelop is an IDE for writing desktop applications for GNOME.

We are looking for localizing MonoDevelop on a number of languages,
starting with the latest version.

MonoDevelop uses the standard GetText framework for translating applications.

I use svn to grab text files. When svn is completed, look in the folder po and 
read
the README file. You will see how to create yourlanguage.po and after that, 
translate
it with po editor like poedit, gtranslator, kbabel.

I take a look at drupal's issue and see that only one people can do a task.
So I will won't translate further until someone tell me that I can do this.

In order to ensure each person gets credit for this task, I created new tasks 
for
each person who claimed the task and specified the language they intend to 
translate to.

Task 31 - Thai - manatsawin
Task 32 - Hebrew - AcePace
Task 33 - Chinese - JohnnyBartleby

If you wish to translate MonoDevelop to any unclaimed language, please "claim" 
this
task and write in your comment which language you intend to translate to.  A

A number of translations already exist; here is their status:

A new translation can involve significantly more work than updating an existing
translation (e.g. 600 strings vs. 2500), therefore in the interests of fairness 
we
will accept updates to existing translations only if the existing translation 
has
fewer than 1000 translated strings.

However, you are still welcome to suggest writing a tutorial for MonoDevelop in 
your
language.

Heads up people, MonoDevelop's build has been split up, and the translations 
are now
split into several parts. On the positive side, we have a shiny user interface 
that
can be used to translate MonoDevelop from within MonoDevelop itself.

However, to keep things simple while we stabilise the new stuff (*I'm* still 
having
trouble making everything build correctly!), I suggest you use the complete
translatable files from before the split, subversion revision 90630:

EVERYONE DOING TRANSLATIONS, PLEASE READ THIS!

http://developer.gnome.org/projects/gtp/l10n-guide/ explains a bit about Gettext
translations, though I'm not familiar with the process myself. There are also 
some
GUI tools for editing .pot files. If you're updating an existing translation, 
bear in
mind that the .PO files in SVN are not up to date with all of the new strings, 
so
you'll need to build the POT and PO files from source.

Note also that C# translatable strings may have substitutions of the form {0}, 
{1}
etc. These will be substituted from code using String.Format, so should be left 
in
your translation.

You have two ways to do this translation:
1) Check out MD from SVN from *just before* the build reorganisation, e.g. 
revision
90630, then follow the instructions in the po/README file. This covers *all* of 
the
sub-project's translations, which we will split up later.

-OR-

2) Check out current MonoDevelop SVN, and follow the instructions in 
main/po/README.
You will also have to translate the po files for each of the sub-projects in 
extras/
and mono-addins (which isn't really set up for translations yet). The advantage 
of
this is that if you build MD and use it to open the MonoDevelop solution, you 
will
see "translation projects" that you can edit within the GUI inside MD itself.

Benedict: You can only have one task at a time, so you need to decide whether

this or the icons first. You can of course do this when you finish the icons, 
unless
someone else claims it first.

I'll do this first because, I can't learn how to create 10 Icons for Tango 
theme in
less than 4 days (sunday I'd like to have a non working day)

So translation is something I can do without learning how to use inkscape first,
maybe I'll draw icons later but I've to learn it first

The PO file above should work with MonoDevelop Beta 3 (0.18), just released.

testing

Note that the compiled MD .mo file will need to go in
/usr/share/locale/LANGUAGE_CODE/LC_MESSAGES/monodevelop.mo where LANGUAGE_CODE 
is the
standard language code for your locale.

Re. my comment above, note you don't need the GNOME Developer Kit -- any distro 
with
MonoDevelop 0.18 and poedit will do fine.

information on the current state of the translations. All .po files in SVN are
up-to-date with the source, and are now split into several parts. They can be
downloaded directly at 
http://anonsvn.mono-project.com/viewcvs/trunk/monodevelop/ (in
the subdirectories listed in the email).

The msgmerge tool can be used to update your semi-translated .po file using the
messages.po reference catalogs. (Please backup carefully beforehand :)
