Windows Vista: that's probably caused by a bug in Windows: if you install the
WaveRT version of the non-
WaveRT version and vice versa, the information defining the sound interface in
the registry is messed up so
that it doesn't work. Delete the corresponding item from the device manager,
scan for new hardware and
repeat that process until no drivers are found. Then reboot and install the
driver of your choice.
Windows 7: Driver signing might be required even for the 32 bit version. A nice
user has posted a short set of
instructions on the UserComments page on how to test-sign it.

I've followed your instructions, but I'm still experiencing the same problems...
Another random thing I've noticed is that it seems to rectify itself if I change
output channels to from 5.1 to Quad or Stereo, but after a few stream open\close
orperations it does the same thing again, and subsequently changing output
settings
doesn't have any effect.

This seems to be odd. I'd like you to answer a few questions to help me to get
an idea about the bug:
What kind of player software do you use ?
Do you use the analog or the digital ports of the soundcard?
What's your configuration in the Vista's "Sound" panel?
I'd also like to ask you to eliminate a hardware error by booting from a Linux
livecd or by using the vendor's
driver.

I'm using GOM player for video (www.gomlab.com/), and WinAMP for audio, as well
as my
own apps (I'm a developer) utilising both waveout and directsound, and the
problem
occurs in all of them, including WMP.
I'm using the analogue outputs, and Vista/Windows7's config is set to 5.1 with
full
range all round. Windows panel seems to override your applet tho because if I
change
the settings in your applet, when I click test they revert, and after an OK
they're
back to Windows settings.
From the hardware side the card seems to be okay, it works fine in Ubuntu 9.10
and in
Windows XP with CMI's drivers.
PS: WinAMP hangs when the output fails and all Windows sound stops as well.
Attempting to play Windows "Test" sounds fails, and you applet produces a
message
saying it completed sucessfully, but there's no output.

In Vista and 7, changing the speaker configuration isn't possible anymore from
a user mode app because
the DS interface for that has been deprecated. The functionality for that in
the applet is therefore non-
working.
I'll try to reproduce the error later this evening.

And I failed - it works flawlessly on my machine.
Please try the debug version here:
http://sites.google.com/site/dogber1/Home/debug-x86.zip
Before installing and during usage, run DebugView with kernel capture enabled.
I
need the debug log then to hopefully get a clue on what might go wrong.
