Add an option to translate an existing subtitle, like on YouTube. Completely or random sparse words to learn. Possibility to choose principal translation + learning translation, so any language can be used to learn any language from any language too #2

There seems to be no way to obtain the content of existing subtitles.

If I get it right, the add-on can retrieve metadatas concerning one subtitle (in particular, its name, language and URL to download it) but the work of the add-on stop here, it's upon stremio client to download it and launch it on the watched movie. So that will need an add-on that can manipulate the actual file

Yes, so what do I need to do?

So that will need an add-on that can manipulate the actual file

I don't understand, please be specific.

Let's delve into the "So that will need an add-on that can manipulate the actual file" part and explore how this add-on could work and what challenges it might face.

Creating an Add-On for Subtitle Manipulation:

To achieve the desired functionality, you would need to develop an add-on that interacts with the subtitle files associated with the videos. This add-on would need to perform several key tasks:

  1. Retrieving Subtitle Content: The add-on should be able to retrieve subtitle files associated with a given video. This could involve querying the platform's API to get metadata about the video and its available subtitle files.

  2. Processing Subtitles: Once the add-on has obtained the subtitle files, it would need to parse their content. This involves extracting the text and timestamps of the subtitles. This content can then be manipulated based on the user's selected translation options.

  3. Translation and Learning: The core functionality of the add-on is to provide translation options. Users could choose to translate the entire subtitle, specific phrases, or even just sparse words for language learning purposes. The add-on would use translation APIs or libraries to generate the translated text and replace the original content.

  4. Language Pair Mapping: The add-on should be able to handle different language pairs effectively. This means users should be able to translate from any language to any other language. The add-on would need to manage multiple translation models or APIs to accommodate the wide range of language combinations.

  5. User Interface Integration: For a seamless user experience, the add-on should integrate into the platform's user interface. This might involve adding a new menu option or button to videos that have subtitle tracks. Users could select this option to open the translation and learning interface.

Challenges and Considerations:

  1. Quality of Translation: Translation quality can vary significantly depending on the language pair and the translation service being used. Ensuring accurate and contextually appropriate translations is crucial for user satisfaction.

  2. Timestamp Adjustments: When translating subtitles, the duration of spoken lines might change due to differences in text length between languages. The add-on would need to adjust timestamps to ensure that the translated subtitles sync properly with the video.

  3. Subtitle Format Compatibility: Subtitle files come in various formats, such as SRT, VTT, and more. The add-on must be able to handle these formats to ensure compatibility with different videos.

  4. Performance and Server Load: Translation services can be resource-intensive, especially when dealing with numerous users. The add-on should be designed to handle peak loads and ensure smooth performance.

  5. Privacy and Data Security: Handling subtitle content involves user data. It's essential to prioritize data security and privacy, ensuring that subtitle content is processed securely and not misused.

  6. Licensing and Legal Considerations: If the add-on allows users to translate copyrighted content, there might be legal and licensing issues to address.

Developing an add-on that can manipulate subtitle files to provide translation and language learning features is a complex task, requiring expertise in software development, natural language processing, and API integration. It's important to thoroughly plan and test the add-on to ensure it meets user expectations and delivers a valuable and seamless experience.

What does this have to do with your title? This is just an add-on that allows stremio videos to obtain assrt subtitles. Throughout the process, the program did not obtain the specific content of the subtitles, but only returned a link. There is no method to obtain the specific content of subtitles in Stremio's Addon SDK.

Another add-on traduce some words, so it seems to be possible to give that, whether it be through Stremio's Add-on SDK or not. And it's the long explanation of my title, to it has all to do with it

shanyan-wcx commented 1 year ago

This has nothing to do with the development purpose of my add-on. Instead of using machine translation, it's better to search for subtitles in the corresponding language.

Subtitles aren't always available in all languages, and there is already an add-on that search all languages subtitles, it's not the purpose of the request. And in the term "add [something]" there is the concept of adding to the concept, add a purpose to the development. Replying "it's not the purpose" to "add that" is like replying to a waiter taking your order at a restaurant by saying, "I'm not here to eat." It misses the opportunity to enrich the experience and purpose behind the development. Just as a chef adds unique flavors and ingredients to a dish to make it exceptional, the concept of "adding" implies enhancing, enriching, and expanding upon the original idea. So, when considering the development of this add-on, it's important to delve deeper into its potential and explore how it can provide value beyond what's already available.
