There are a lot of great projects on there, but most of them are in the Ethereum ecosystem.
I've heard of Ethereum, how is this different?
Gitcoin is composed of several technologically-interesting "money lego" pieces built on top of Ethereum:
It's an Ethereum DApp (that you can interact through a browser wallet like MetaMask).
It DAI as a Stable Coin powered by Decentralized Finance mechanics (DeFi).
Several foundations pool money that is used to match donations with Quadratic Voting.
ZKSync is used to bundle transactions with Zero Knowledge Rollups to reduce fees.
Sounds complicated, but the implementation details aren't important...
What do I actually need to know?
All you need is an Ethereum wallet (like MetaMask) with some DAI (and a bit of Ether to pay for gas) which you can get on an exchange like Coinbase, and off you go.
Why should I donate through Gitcoin?
It's a great way to test drive a lot of cutting edge technology and see what a consumer application of them might look like.
If there is a Grant Matching event going on, then projects with more unique contributors will get a multiplier on the funds raised!
I like the people behind it, they do good work. :)
What is Gitcoin?
Gitcoin is a platform for funding open source using various Ethereum mechanics.
I have a couple of projects on Gitcoin where I raise funding for work grants:
