chore!: update the codebase, documentation, metadata, tests #223

This PR follows the plan as mentioned in #222. This is the first step towards an easier to maintain codebase in preparation for further improvements and eventual webpack v5 support. This will be the basis for a stable version 3.0.0 release, which diverges from previous v3.0.0 release candidates.
