OpenVPN not being used for traffic when wifi tethering

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Start OpenVPN and verify connection by checking IP in phone browser
2. Start portable wifi hotspot (WPA2/PSK)
3. Connect with Laptop (Ubuntu) and check IP in browser
4. IP is NOT that from the phone :(

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I would hope to see an IP address that matches the one assigned by the VPN

What version of the product are you using?
0.47 - from the market

Which Android phone are you using?
HTC Desire

Which firmware version are you using?
Android 2.3.7 (Cyanogenmod 7.1)
Kernel 2.6.37.6-cyanogenmod-geb50077

I should add that I have tested this when using the phone internet connection 
NOT wifi - but I'm not sure that should make a difference.
