I forgot: You need to change bigbluebutton-client/bin/conf/config.xml to add:
useMicrophone="true" 
in the VideoconfModule settings...

I created a fork of BBB in order to maintain my patch: 
http://github.com/amartel/bigbluebutton

For people who don't know how to compile BBB, binaries and instructions are 
available from http://amartel.github.com
