To use a wallet native system (in Ubuntu is Keyring, in Kubuntu is KWallet, and
in Mac is Keychain). This is way more elegant and secure method for handling
user passwords. If you really dont want the trouble, maybe just set the config
file with chmod 600, and INFORM the user about the risks that is his
responsibility. Some famous apps from early ages like mutt do this.
