Would it be possible to create a selection wheel for choosing between selection modes? Where if you held down TAB a wheel would come up and you could then choose between control point, edge, face, and solid. There is a Blender add-on that does similar for moving between object and edit mode, where it allows you to select between face, edge, and vertex.
