This PR aims to make some of the classes more readable as well as doing some general cleanup and making use of more abstraction.

This basically mimics the changes I made to my own 1.18 branch (that are unmerged in case we want to leave it before making the pr to update the 1.18) so if you want to leave it as it is feel free
