Future of this overlay #38

Since ubuntu announced the switch to Mir, I think this overlay has to change some policies about packages. Canonical won't switch to X.org 1.14 (what means no xorg-server update possible so far).

But patching packages like gtk+ or xorg-server isn't that easy if we have to do it on our own. I want just to collect some thoughts about this.,

Good question, I don't know how difficult it will be to integrate Mir into the overlay. The easiest way would be, if Gentoo will official support Mir side by side to Wayland and Xorg. But I guess Mir will be a more or less "proprietary" server by Canonical.

yes, I think it will have the same state as unity today, though it is opensource only canonical is working on it

May be a bit soon to speculate too deeply about it, lets see what Canonical come up with.

Whatever they do come up with, I don't think Unity's migration to MIR will be detrimental to the overlay's current integration with the portage tree.

I'd like to think that we would have MIR and xorg-server co-existing on the same system if one chooses. If you want to use Unity, then it will use MIR - and for everything else you have xorg-server.

I guess the big question will be 'Will the underlying packages that require patching to work with MIR (eg.mesa), also work with xorg-server once patched?' Hard to say at this stage, I'd guess they would (or could with a minimal amount of fuss).

I don't think we'll have to maintain our own patches for this change either, just continue on with the model of using the Ubuntu maintained patchsets for the packages we need to have Unity run on Gentoo.

I'm kind of excited by all this really as I think the move to QT5/QML2 will be an oustanding performer. Unity2d was written in QML with some QT5 backports and it absolutely flew.

Closing this for now until it affects the overlay. For mir discussions there is the 'unity-next' overlay. Thanks :)
