Initially I thought these examples should use msg/self, but I eventually realized that is only necessary in the extra-parameter version of self. I'm not sure if that's just me, or if there is some general potential for confusion.
At least for slides I find it a nice simplification to drop the extra machinery to set up self. I guess it depends how much you think self reference is orthogonal to inheritance.
